BEAVERCREEK — Beavercreek High School students will shift to remote learning for five days beginning Monday, Nov. 16.

The district has seen an increasing number of staff and student absences due to COVID-19, but officials anticipate resuming in-person learning at BHS and Ferguson Hall (freshmen building) Monday, Nov. 30, after the scheduled fall break the week of Thanksgiving.

“Our district continues to monitor each of our 11 buildings daily and examine case count, connectivity of cases, impact of quarantines, and our ability to staff our buildings adequately,” according to a release from the district. “Our restart plan is designed to be responsive to what we are experiencing in our buildings and in our community. In addition, our plan also allows us to modify the instructional delivery model for each building accordingly. We will continue to communicate the impact we are experiencing in our schools.”

Finding an acceptable number of substitute teachers has been a major issue.

“It has always been our desire to remain in school and to offer our students and families the ability to receive traditional, in-person instruction,” the release said. “Our ability to deliver this highly desired instructional delivery model has largely been dependent on our ability to provide adequate staffing. Filling vacancies in our buildings has been an increasing struggle as our sub pool has been exhausted as more staff are impacted by either a positive diagnosis or by a quarantine.”

As the spread of COVID-19 continues to increase both at the state and community level, the numbers of cases in the has increased and “we are beginning to experience a greater impact in our schools,” according to the release.

“Our numbers of positive students and staff members have continued to increase over the past few weeks. The spread of COVID-19 in our schools remains low, however we are seeing an increase in positive cases and we are experiencing a greater impact in the number of students and staff being required to quarantine,” the release said.

According to the district website, which lists Nov. 6 as the last update, there were three positive cases at the high school, 35 student quarantines and one staff quarantine. Ferguson Hall had one student quarantine listed. Coy Middle School had 70 student quarantines, seven staff quarantines and a total of five positive cases, three students and two staff.
