XENIA — A former Fairborn Cub Scout treasurer who pleaded guilty to stealing funds from her pack was ordered to spend 30 days in jail and pay about $29,000 in restitution Monday in Greene County Common Pleas Court.

Additionally, Judge Stephen Wolaver sentenced Melissa Heerdt, 40, of Beavercreek to five years of probation and to pay court costs.

According to Fairborn police, Heerdt stole the money from Cub Scout Pack 162 from 2011-2013 while acting in a volunteer position as the group’s treasurer.

Heerdt was originally indicted on two fourth-degree felony counts of grand theft in April 2015. As part of a plea agreement, Heerdt pleaded guilty to one of the counts in September.

Cub Scout packs can raise funds through approved fundraisers, dues and activities. The missing funds would have been used for Cub Scout day camps and activities, awards, events such as a such as the pinewood derby and “Blue & Gold” banquets, recognition for the Cub Scouts, supplies for the pack and den meetings and field trips.

“This situation is sad and a very rare occurrence in scouting,” Boy Scouts of American Tecumseh Council CEO Jim Nolan said when the investigation into the thefts began. “Every leader undergoes a criminal background check and must be approved by the chartered organization.”
