Fairborn rescinds football coach contract

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn City School District rescinded the contract offered to Britton Devier to become the high school football coach and a certified teacher during an emergency special session Monday, Feb. 8.

The board previously voted to hire him during its last regular board meeting Thursday, Feb. 4.

“Upon further research and reflection, the board decided that he would not be a good for Fairborn City Schools and therefore the offer of employment has been rescinded,” a press release from FCSD said.

Court documents from the Northern District of Ohio Western Division revealed that Devier, former head football coach at Woodmore High School, was allegedly involved in a now-settled civil rights case in 2014, in which “tortuous misconduct” was alleged to have been committed against a minor child during football practice in September 2013 as a means of punishing and hazing particular team members.

A team member, who was a sophomore high school student at the time of the incident, experienced severe and permanent personal injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, according to the lawsuit. The court document said as a result of the event, the student would no longer be able to participate in former daily enjoyable activities or sports.

The player was diagnosed with a concussion, parethesia, pain of both upper extremities and cervical ligamentous injury, which caused temporary weakness and sensory changes in the limbs of the player.

“After further research, we felt that we didn’t have the fit for the football position in the program,” Superintendent Terry Riley said.
