FAIRBORN — The Tecumseh Council of the Boy Scouts of America promoted 59 young men from varying troops in the area to Eagle Scout status during a ceremony Sunday.

Col. John Devillier, 88th Air Base Wing Commander at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, delivered the keynote address, in which he told the crowd that he served as an Eagle Scout.

“My experiences in the Boy Scouts and becoming an Eagle Scouts made me a much different person and a much better person and a more effective leader in the United States Air Force,” Devillier said. “The Boy Scouts has a tradition of service, over a century of it. Some of the things might have changed over the years, like the merit badges or uniforms, but preparing you for life, that underlying part of the Boy Scouts of America, has not changed.”

Community leaders, including Devillier, Fairborn Mayor Dan Kirkpatrick, Bellbrook Mayor Bob Baird and State Representative Rick Perales, lined up the stage to offer praise to the new Eagle Scouts as they walked across and proclaimed their new status.

“I think we have a void of leadership and service in this country — too many people are trying to get there for different reasons instead of the right reason, and I think you learn that in your core values as an Eagle Scout,” Perales said. “That’s why I see a while lot of leaders in this room, future leaders.”
