Devotional: Job’s boast

0

“My feet have closely followed his steps; I have kept to his way without turning aside. I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.” (Job 23:11-12)

Here Job has quite a boast. We don’t know how he can be so bold. We would think he was the perfect person. He would be the Christ Himself. In fact, these words might be put into the mouth of Jesus, and in that case, be accurate. Certainly he has tried to be faithful. His intentions have been good. He has treasured obedience to God above everything else. But he is wrong. He is not perfect and needs a Redeemer like everyone else.

Pride is the downfall of us all. Was Job prideful in his attitude as he confronted God? God eventually deals with this, and puts Job in his place, even though he is one of His most obedient followers. All of us fall short and pride must be dealt with. We cannot speak as does Job. We recognize our shortcomings. We do however, agree with his last statement. We do treasure the Lord’s words to us. Praise His Holy Name!

Heavenly Father, we all need to be put in our place at some point in life. We need to recognize that You are not to be questioned by Your creation. You are the truth, wisdom and understanding we seek. Make that our continual desire. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
