Scarberry takes leave of absence

FAIRBORN — Superintendent Dave Scarberry of the Fairborn City School District will take a leave of absence as of Aug. 31 for the remainder of his contract following health concerns. In the meantime, the district has named Director of Business and Classified Personnel Ed Gibbons as the acting superintendent until an interim superintendent is in place.

Scarberry served the district for 13 years, and has a child within the district.

The board of education will meet and discuss the hiring of an interim superintendent 5:30 p.m. Sept. 1 during a special executive board session.

“I’m sorry that we’re losing him, but we’re looking forward to hiring a new superintendent and moving our district forward in the coming year,” Board of Education President Tess Little said. “We’ve got lots of good things going on in Fairborn right now, and we want the district to move forward.”

The board plans to work with K-12 consultants in regards to a superintendent search beginning in January 2016, with a new individual hired and ready to begin the 2016-2017 school year. Several community forums will take place to discuss the hiring of the permanent replacement beginning after election time.

The interim will be an individual hired from outside of the district. Little said they are seeking someone who knows what they’re doing with no politics involved or points to prove. She feels that it’s important to select an individual who has interim superintendent experience, and may be someone who has previously served as in an interim superintendent or is a currently-retired superintendent.

“Our professionalism in the handling of this situation is extremely important,” Little said in a statement.
