Cross Country

Carroll claims titles at Moeller

CINCINNATI — The Carroll Cross Country teams started their season off with exciting races and great success at the Moeller Invitational last Friday night. The men’s and women’s teams both claimed the Division II-III team championship over a 12-team field.

The Lady Patriots used a strong pack of Claire Farrell, Maria McCarty, Jill Giner, Kiersten Compton, and Madi Giner to place five runners in the top 20. Rio Harrelson and Kesla DeWall followed closely to secure the victory.

In the boys race, Mike Laughlin was the individual champion, while Karl Grossman, Kevin Sheedy, and Sam Janson also earned medals for finishing third, fourth and sixth. Luke Danis and Jason Dong rounded out the winning team.

The Carroll cross country team competes this Saturday at the Miamisburg Invitational.

Girls Soccer

Xenia 0, Kenton Ridge 0

The Xenia Women’s soccer team put up a tough fight against Kenton Ridge. The ending result was a draw.

After a weather delay, the women’s team finished the first half at a score of 0 to 0. Then, with a 5 minute break the women’s team kicked off the second half. Arianna Clemens had five great saves in the second half at goalie. Konni Lorenz and Cheyenne McGee had several good shots on goal.

The women’s team will next play at 7 p.m., Sept. 8 Doug Adams Stadium against Springfield.

Volleyball

Skyhawks fend off Yellow Springs

FAIRBORN — The Skyhawks started and finished strong in Monday’s 25-14, 26-24, 1925, 25-14 win over Yellow Springs. Leading the pack with 13 Kills, one block, two aces and four digs was Taylor Rice. Kennedy Brown had four aces, one kill, 25 assists and 13 digs. Kayleigh Finlayson and Cloe Snyder both had 17 digs.

Rams defeat Dayton Christian in four

The Greeneview Rams claimed a 25-18, 25-18, 17-25, 25-14 win over Dayton Christian on Saturday. Bryce Ratliff had six aces, six digs and 19 assists, Caitlin Sweat had 14 kills to go with three blocks, Kaitlyn Schloss had eight kills and five digs, Brooke Phillips came up with 16 digs, and Valery Nix had 22 digs in the win.

Raiders win Wolstein soccer tourney

COLUMBUS — The Wright State men’s soccer team claimed the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic title Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Cal State Fullerton.

The Raiders and the Titans were scoreless at half, but WSU broke through first as junior Peguy Ngatcha picked up his second goal of the season from freshman Jackson Dietrich at the 48:00 minute mark. It was Dietrich’s third assist on the season. It wasn’t long before the Raiders went up 2-0 as junior Jake Stovall headed in a corner kick from junior Sam DeRoy at 49:45.

Fullerton, which played in last year’s NCAA Tournament, got on the board by a penalty kick at 75:04 from Robert Coronado. The Raiders posted 12 shots with six on goal while the Titans has 10 shots with three on goal.

The win gives WSU its first tournament title since taking the Dayton Marriott Classic crown in 2010 with victories over and Western Michigan and Indiana Purdue-Ft. Wayne.

Named to the All-Tournament Team from WSU were Eric Lynch, Jackson Dietrich, Tyler Blackmer and Peguy Ngatcha.

Wright State (2-0) returns to action on Friday, Sept. 4, at Kentucky. Game time is 5 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.

Men sweep Horizon League awards

INDIANAPOLIS — The Wright State men’s soccer team swept the first Horizon League weekly awards of the season as Peguy Ngatcha was named the Offensive Player of the Week while Tyler Blackmer was the Defensive Player of the Week.

Ngatcha (Manchester, NH/Kimball Union Academy), a junior forward, scored two goals as the Raiders opened the season by winning the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic, hosted by Ohio State. In a 2-0 win over Binghamton on Friday, Ngatcha scored the game-winning goal as his tally at the 50:17 mark of the second half gave WSU the lead for good. In Wright State’s 2-1 decision over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Ngatcha opened the scoring with a goal at the 48:00 mark of the second half.

Blackmer (Boise, ID/Mountain View), a junior goalkeeper, joined Ngatcha on the all-tournament team as he allowed just one goal in the two matches, that goal coming on a penalty kick. Blackmer recorded three saves in posting his eighth career shutout Friday against Binghamton and had two saves Sunday versus Cal State Fullerton.

WSU women win home opener

FAIRBORN — The Wright State women’s soccer team tallied a goal in each half in posting a 2-0 decision over Belmont in its home opener Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Senior MacKenzie Hamilton opened the scoring for the Raiders at the 8:43 mark in the first half with her first goal of the season. After a shot by sophomore Bryce Hueber was knocked away by the Belmont goalkeeper, Hamilton connected on the rebound. It was Hueber’s second assist of the year.

WSU added an insurance goal at the 58:35 mark of the second half as sophomore Madison McKinney scored off a corner kick from Sarah Colvin. It was McKinney’s first goal of the season and the second assist for Colvin.

Senior goalkeepers Halle Pyle and Kelsey Deal combined on the shutout as Deal recorded two saves and Pyle one.

The Raiders outshot the Bruins 17-9 and led in corner kicks 10-5.

Wright State (2-2) takes on a pair of local rivals next weekend as the Raiders host Miami on Friday, Sept. 4, followed by crosstown rival Dayton on Sunday, Sept. 6, at UD’s Baujan Field. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
