FAIRBORN – Wright State University welcomed more than 5,000 new students on the first day of fall semester.

The 5,066 new students swelled the total enrollment to 17,842, the fourth highest total in school history.

Among the 5,066 new students, 2,533 came directly from high school, 1,154 were transfer students, 156 were nontraditional new students and 1,223 were graduate students. The new graduate students increased the total number of graduate students to 4,218, which is the most in the university’s history.

“I’m proud that we’re welcoming 5,000 new students with the ambition to make the world a better place and are their choice for college education,” President David R. Hopkins said. “We continue to grow.”

The presence of 428 medical students in the Boonshoft School of Medicine boosted total fall semester enrollment from 17,414 to 17,842.

New and returning students were greeted by the new Student Success Center, a three-story, $17 million building designed to increase retention and graduation of undergraduates. The building features high-tech, active-learning classrooms as well as writing and math support labs.
