Cedarfest makes major change

CEDARVILLE — CedarFest is going back to its roots.

For one day during this weekend’s Labor Day celebration, CedarFest will become an entirely free event.

“The way it started was actually a community-picnic type at the park,” said Rich Fouts, director of parks and recreation for the village. “We’re going back to that scenario.”

The community block party runs 2-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7 and will feature festival games, kickball and a potluck-style dinner 5-7 p.m. Cedarville is providing hot dogs. Community members are asked to bring a dish to share and a canned good donation for the food pantry.

The annual parade — featuring Fire Chief Scott Baldwin as grand marshal — kicks off the day 1 p.m.

CedarFest begins off Saturday, Sept. 5 and continues Sunday, Sept. 6 at Cedarville Community Park. By packing those two days full of events and entertainment, organizers expect as many people over two days as they would have drawn over three in years past.

“That’s what were hoping,” Fouts said.

A 5K race opens the celebration 8 .m. Saturday, followed by a softball tournament and fishing derby 9 a.m. Games open at 10 a.m. and run until 9 p.m.

Other featured activities include Little Mr. & Miss Cedarville (11 a.m.); magic show (2 p.m.); Elvis Presley impersonator (3 p.m.) and a K-9 demo (4 p.m.). A community dance 8-11 p.m. closes the evening.

Zumba resumes the action 9 a.m. Sunday followed by Heartsong 10 a.m. and a community worship 11 .am. Games run 12-9 p.m. Featured attractions include tug-a-truck (2 p.m.); silent auction (2-5 p.m.); Musician Kyle Eldridge (3 p.m.); car show (6 p.m.); Soul Fire Tribe Dancers (9:15) and fireworks at dark.

Monday activities include a Cedarville’s Got Talent (2-4 p.m.); and a fishing derby (3 p.m.).

The Cedarville Township Volunteer Fire Department also holds a couple activities in conjunction with CedarFest. The popular pancake breakfast takes place 7 a.m to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept, 5 and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7 at the fire station. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children and seniors. Bingo takes place 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. The golf scramble has an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Saturday, Sept. 6 at Locust Hills.

Labor Day is significant in Cedarville as James Kyle, a U.S. senator from South Dakota who was one of the main sponsors of a bill to create the holiday, was born here.
