ENON – An Enon man has been charged with breaking and entering and receiving stolen property after Clark County sheriff’s deputies search his Western Avenue home in Enon on Sunday, Feb. 14 and found a number of items that were reported stolen earlier that day.

Gregory W. Carpenter II, 33, was indicted on two felony counts of breaking and entering and one count of receiving stolen property on Monday, Feb. 22.

Deputies were led to Carpenter’s home after one of the deputies was dispatched to W &W Auto Tech, 8500 Dayton-Springfield Road, Sunday morning on a report of a break-in to a shed. According to the deputy’s incident report, Kenneth Weekly, owner of the auto shop, reported that he had located a transmission and a red sandblaster, believed to be his, along the roadway when he was driving near the 7,000 block of Dayton-Springfield Road. Weekly said he soon discovered that his shed had been broken into, and noticed several items were missing.

During a conversation with the deputy, Weekly said he believed the stolen property was left on the side of the road following a motor vehicle accident. Upon contacting the Ohio State Patrol, the deputy learned that a state trooper had investigated a hit-skip accident involving a pickup truck around 4:26 a.m. Sunday in the 7,400 block of Dayton-Springfield Road. The state trooper said he had made an attempt to contact the owner of the vehicle at the 34 Western Ave. location, but no one answered the door. The trooper said he had also noticed a damaged rear tire on the owner’s truck and wood in the truck bed that matched wood that was left at the scene of the accident.

Deputies followed up and attempted to make contact with Carpenter at the Western Avenue location but were told that he was not at home. However, the deputies looked through the window of the garage and saw several items that matched the description of the allegedly stolen items, as well as a salt spreader that was identified by Weekly and subsequently reported stolen from Lance Roofing and Siding at 8460 Dayton-Springfield Road.

Clark County Sheriff’s detectives were called to Carpenter’s home and obtained a consent to search the home from his wife. The suspect was found hiding in the attic and was taken into custody without further incident. At that time, the items in the garage were identified by the owners as being their property.

An arraignment date has not been announced at this time.
