Xenia 11-year-old about to turn three

XENIA — Brody Stanfill is like most other preteens.

He hangs out with his friends, plays video games, and loves baseball and basketball.

But unlike most other kids Stanfill’s age, the fifth-grader at McKinley Elementary School is unique in that according to the calendar he is only three years old.

McKinley was born Feb. 29, 2008 — a Leap Year. He’s one of the estimated 205,000 people in the U.S. to have an official birthday once every four years.

“It’s special,” Stanfill said. “Just feel like I’m in the middle of (the) attention.”

For his big day, he is getting a sleepover with his friends. And he’s also getting a weekend visit from sister Madison, who left for basic training in the Air Force several months ago and has been unable to get home since.

And then there is the cake.

“We’re making my cake say Leap Year,” Stanfill said.

The Stanfills do celebrate Brody’s birthday every year, usually the weekend closest to Feb. 29.

“He’s had a birthday before in February, and some in March,” his mother, Tiffany, said. But regardless of what day Feb. 29 falls, Brody’s party is always that day.

“It confuses him, I’m not going to lie,” Tiffany said. “He’ll go to school and they’ll announce his birthday on whatever random day they pick. And we’ll throw his party on whatever random weekend we’ll pick. There for a while he thought he had a birthday week. People were just saying happy birthday all the time.”

But his friends … that’s another story.

“They say it makes no sense,” Brody said.

But he gets it now, according to Tiffany.

“I’m special,” Brody said.

In the background, Tiffany said, “You’re silly is what you are.”

But what was she expecting? Technically he’s only three-years-old.
