Senior Center, YMCA remain open

XENIA — While many gathering places in Xenia are shutting down during the coronavirus outbreak, a few are remaining open to serve their customers and members.

The Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center is continuing with the status quo.

“Right now we are delivering all our services to our clients with extra safety precautions (sanitizing equipment more often, sanitizing bus seats more often, stuff like that),” Judy Baker, executive director, said in an email. “We are also, of course, not having events with more than 100 members, but most of our events are groups smaller than that and we feel socialization is very important to the senior population. We have put public health department guidance in all of our game rooms advising clients of hygiene practices, etc.”

The senior center is also ready should the situation change.

“We have a contingency plan in place should we have to curtail operations of our services or activities,” Baker said. “We also advise clients to stay home if their health needs dictate or listen to their physicians or if they feel they should. We are here for those who are healthy and want to get out.”

A message from President/CEO Dale Brunner on the YMCA of Greater Dayton and Xenia web pages dated March 11 indicated the buildings would remain open and operate with heightened cleansing protocol.

“Our team is updating our cleaning procedures to ensure they meet or exceed CDC guidelines. Hard surfaces such as doors, counters, and fitness equipment will be wiped down with a high-grade disinfectant and multi-purpose cleaner every 30 minutes. Also, if we are advised by the CDC that a person exhibiting coronavirus symptoms has entered our facilities, we will shut down the location to allow for additional cleaning and decontamination of all human contact surfaces. We’re also adjusting our services to limit person-to-person contamination. This includes increasing the availability of hand sanitizer, spray bottles with disinfectant, asking members to clean up after using equipment, and asking ill members/participants to return home.”

Brunner also reminded residents to cough into the “crook of your elbow” or into a tissue that is immediately thrown away, frequently wash or disinfect hands and wipe down fitness equipment, and stay home when they are sick.

The Greene County Public Library system has closed and cancelled all of its events through April 15.
