City of Xenia receives Auditor of State Award

XENIA — The City of Xenia was recently recognized with an Auditor of State Award with Distinction for 2020, its third award in a row.

Awarded by the Auditor of State’s Office for the fiscal year 2020’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), the auditor’s office audits nearly 6,000 local governments and school districts in the state and less than 4 percent of those entities are eligible for the award according to city officials.

“We’re really pleased to have received this award,” Finance Director Ryan Duke said. “We work hard to ensure that we are properly accounting for public dollars. Greene County received a similar award. Fairborn and Beavercreek do a great job over there and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve received it.”

To receive the award the city must be in good financial standing and have no designations of fiscal distress or other financial concerns identified by the state. A Comprehensive Annual Financial Report must be prepared and cannot contain any findings for recovery, significant deficiencies, or questionable costs, according to Joe Braden, West Regional liaison for Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber.

“This puts Xenia in a very select group,” he said.

Duke was recognized during the Sept. 23 council meeting, which was attended by Braden. Duke said some good things are on the horizon for the city.

“One of the biggest projects we’ve got going is the redevelopment of Xenia Towne Square, it’s one of the more significant projects happening in our community,” he said. “We also will be replacing all our financial systems, our software programs are being updated. We will be doing a significant replacement of electronic systems. BS&A are going to be doing much of our financial billing such as utility billing, finance management, asset management, payroll, human resources, and accounts receivable. It’s expected to be completed around the end of April.”
