Local libraries announce January programs

YELLOW SPRINGS — The Yellow Springs Community Library will hold a variety of programs for the month of January. Some programs require registration. Yellow Springs Community Library is located at 415 Xenia Ave. Call 937-352-4003.

Old Time Music with the Corndrinkers for adults, 3-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. Listen to the Corndrinkers, an old-time stringband and a Miami Valley cultural institution since the mid-1970s. As they perform they will discuss the history of old-time music, which features playing styles that pre-date bluegrass and go back to the early years of United States history.

Computer Basics for adults, 2-4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23. Geared toward the beginner, this class offers an introduction to the monitor, keyboard, tower and mouse in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Registration required.

Herbal-infused Salves and Balms with Amanda Banaszak for adults, 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22. Learn about different oils, butters and waxes used to make a simple healing salve and explore ways to use herbs and essential oils to craft to balms for specific uses. This is a make and take class. Registration required.

Secret Agent Afternoon for ages 7 and up, 3- 4p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24. Do you like secret messages, codes and solving mysteries. Join the library after school for some spy games, crafts and snacks.

Oreo Tasting for ages 12-18, 4-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27. Taste test different Oreos. Vote for your favorite flavor.

Basic Songwriting for adults, 1-3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, and Feb. 3. Have you always want to write a song? Do you have an idea for a song? Learn or revisit songwriting basics. Start from scratch or bring a song you’ve already started. Knowing how to play an instrument or read music is not required. Must be able to attend all three classes. Registration required.

Brain Games — Fun Activities to Strengthen Neuroplasticity for adults, 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29. Recent research indicates that certain daily activities optimize brain and body health. Join Lynn Hardman to hear about the research and try out some of the activities. Registration required.

Origami Yoda Club: The Surprise Attack of Jabba the Puppet 3-4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31. Will the Force be with the student alliance and their origami puppets in their battle to get back their favorite classes? Hear a chapter read aloud, have a snack and join us for some Star Wars origami and other fun activities based on the series.
