According to ancestry.com, the world’s largest online resource for family history, seventy-eight percent of Americans say they are interested in learning more about their family history. Ancestry.com partnered with the TLC channel on a television show titled Who Do You Think You Are? .

Who Do You Think You Are? takes a celebrity and helps discover more about his or her family roots through a look deep into one or more aspects of the celebrity’s family tree. It is fascinating television, in my opinion, to discover interesting stories of the lives of people long ago connected to these famous individuals.

For the follower of Jesus Christ, this is also an applicable question to ask: “Who do you think you are?” Let’s take a look at some passages in Scripture in the letter to the believers in Ephesus that tells us who we are because of our relationship with Christ.

First, the Bible tells us that God “has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ…” (Ephesians 1:3) Just take a moment to consider this wonderful truth. You and I, if we belong to Christ, have been blessed with every spiritual blessing. Not just a single blessing but every blessing. I believe that God reveals more of these blessings to us the longer we walk with Him.

Second, the Bible tells us in Ephesians 1:4 that “He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.” Some people automatically go to the thought of how God could choose one and not another. This is something that theologians have debated for centuries. However, I believe God wants us to recognize the great love He has for each one that knows Him and is seeking to walk with Him. Being chosen is part of our identity in Jesus Christ.

Third, the Bible tells us “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.” (Ephesians 1:7-8) Here we read the unfathomable truth that we have been bought with the price of the death of Jesus. It was because He died that we may now live. Why? Because of His grace which He lavished on us. “Lavish” means “to expend or give in great amounts or without limit”. (dictionary.com)

Do you comprehend the great love God has for you as His child through these passages? This is who you are in Him. You have been uniquely made and He wants to live His life through you so that you may be a blessing to others. This is what it means to walk in Christ as a new creation.

If you want to read more about who you are, go to Ephesians and read this wonderful letter Paul wrote to his readers. Then begin to live this life in His strength and power.

“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus.” — Ephesians 1:1
