XENIA — For more than 70 years the Xenia Hospitality Chorus has been entertaining in barbershop quartet style.

The 15th chapter established under the Barbershop Harmony Society — with 35 members — is now seeking new voices to join the group.

The chorus rehearses 7 p.m. every Thursday at the First Church of Christ, 411 Ledbetter Road in Xenia. Members sing in quartets and make and renew friendships at the same time.

One of the most unique (and fun according to members) things the chorus does at rehearsal is an exercise where “tags” are sung. Tags are the big endings added to a song after the usual, published ending. A tag extends the song with some of the closest harmonies and best chords of the entire song. For barbershoppers, it’s like singing the best part of the song without having to learn the whole song.

“Barbershop rehearsal is one of the highlights of my week,” said John Velbeck. “No matter how I feel when I arrive, I always feel better when I leave. Barbershop singing just naturally lifts your spirits.”

Thursday, June 18 has been targeted as a date for interested singers to come and audition with the group.
