XENIA — When it comes to patient safety, Greene Memorial Hospital is among the best in the country.

That’s what the Leapfrog Group — a national patient safety watchdog — said when it gave the Xenia-based hospital an A in its bi-annual grade release. Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 US hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts and peer-reviewed.

“It is a privilege and honor to receive this award on behalf of the medical staff and the employees,” said GMH Chief of Staff Dr. Francis Cortez. “It’s not surprising. We work very hard. It really tells the community that we’re focused on the community, providing world class medical care to the citizens of Xenia. The biggest focus we’ve had from the medical staff standpoint is patient care.”

Of the hospitals that were assigned scores, 844 received an A.

“It helps the citizens feel secure,” said GMH President Rick Dodds. “This is a safety score. Really it tells them a holistic story from a patient-safety perspective. The hospital is committed to focusing on our patients. We’re proud of the staff and proud of the physicians who made this happen.”

According to the Leapfrog Group, hospital safety breakdowns kill more than 200,000 Americans each year. Greene is proactive to make sure breakdowns are kept to a minimum, if not totally prevented.

“The bottom line is we meet weekly and we have certain benchmarks from the time a patient is seen to the time a patient is discharged,” Cortez said. “We monitor any positive or negative patient interaction. We take that very seriously. If there is something that is identified, we address that immediately. We work together as a team to address any issues that we feel is an issue, even a potential issue. We’re small enough to where we can communicate directly with each department head.”

The score comes at a good time for the hospital, which has a crucial renewal levy on the Nov. 8 ballot.

“Our levy focuses on advanced care in the community,” Dodds said. “That quality score emphasizes the great work the hospital is doing in the community.”
