YELLOW SPRINGS — In recognition of his constant passion towards the region’s natural resources coupled with his practical and hands-on approach, Jim Mason of Beavercreek has been named one of two Partners for the Environment 2016 Individual of the Year honorees.

Mason was nominated for the award by Greene County Parks & Trails.

Mason combines extensive knowledge about eradicating invasive plant species with the ability to inspire and teach others the best methods that meet their organization’s goals.

His practical approach to invasive plant management, especially with government agencies, has made a significant impact on many of Greene County’s natural areas. He understands funding/staffing limitations and how to best maximize those resources to benefit the environment. His efforts at Hebble Creek Reserve, Travertine Fen, Hershner Reserve, Cemex Reserve and Beaver Creek Wetlands Preserve have been vital to protecting these green spaces from the encroachment of invasive plant species. As a park agency, GCP&T is the grateful recipient of his knowledge as he is always available and willing to work with our land management team. His advice and knowledge is always given respectfully to those willing to learn.

Mason’s strong research skills have allowed him to speak directly to herbicide manufacturers to determine the right product, formulas and timing of application to be economical, effective and safe for both animal and plant life. As a skilled grant writer, he has been instrumental in preserving and protecting natural areas by securing funds through the Clean Ohio Funds. His contributions to restoration and preservation projects can be seen in Greene, Clark, Montgomery, Warren and Hamilton counties.

Active in many environmental organizations, Jim is a founding member of the Ohio Natural Areas and Preserves Association and serves on its board of directors. He is an active member of the Cincinnati Wildflower Preservation Society, volunteer for the Beaver Creek Wetlands Association, member of the Friends of the Little Miami State Park and has been a long-standing board member of BW Greenway. As head of its land team, Mason organized in 2007 the largest honeysuckle pull in Ohio.

He is also owner of Horticultural Management, Inc., which allows him to maintain natural landscapes. As a business owner, Jim utilizes his own business employees to benefit many government agencies and environmental
