XENIA — Greene County Safe Communities Coalition has announced that the winner of the 2016 Fall Break Seat Belt Challenge is Fairborn High School.
On Thursday, Dec. 8 at 9 a.m. at Fairborn High School, the $500 award will be presented to the school. The award was donated by ABRA Auto Body & Glass, Kilbarger Insurance Agency, Phillips Companies, MacAfee Heating and Air, Collett Propane, City Barbeque, and Young’s Jersey Dairy. Representatives from the Safe Communities Coalition, local Fairborn City Officials, School Resource Officer Jim Hearn, members of the school administration, and representatives from the supporting businesses will join together with the entire 2017 senior class of Fairborn High School to accept the award.
This was a project of the Greene County Safe Communities Coalition to raise awareness about seat belt use and encourage students to buckle up every trip, every time. The two weeks prior to each high school’s fall break, announcements about the dangers of driving unbelted, statistics, and encouraging messages were provided, and an unannounced check was completed at the schools. The high school with the highest percentage of students buckled as they were leaving at the end of the school day won the challenge. A total of nine high schools participated in the challenge.
For the second time in a row Fairborn High School has won with 100 percent of their students buckled. Second place went to Legacy Christian Academy – 98.96 percent, and third went to Bellbrook High School – 95.70 percent. “We still have a great amount of education to do with our students in Greene County as well as families and community members as a whole,” Jillian Drew, Safe Communities Coordinator, said. “The concept of wearing a seat belt and knowing it is the right thing to do is grasped by the students, but the execution of actually wearing it can be elusive. We want to encourage wearing that seat belt so that in the end, they increase their chances of arriving at every destination alive and well.”
