ENON — With the 2016 holiday season coming to an end, Cub Scout Pack 36 is offering a simple solution for the safe disposal of live Christmas trees.

“If you know anything about scouts, you know that we like to do a good turn daily. Well this year, you have an opportunity to also do a ‘good turn’ by signing up for our brand new Christmas Tree Recycling Program,” said Bear Den Leader Rob Alexander.

All proceeds will be used to provide a year-round scouting program for Enon-area boys in first through fifth grade.

According to Alexander, there are currently no other options for curbside Christmas tree pickup in Clark County or the surrounding areas. He wanted to create a service for the local community that would not only raise money for Pack 36, but would also conserve the planet’s natural resources.

“Recycling live Christmas trees was a perfect fit,” he said. “It does a lot of good for this planet, and I tell you what, it does a lot of good for our Cub Scout Pack. This is what helps pay for campouts, for the Pinewood Derby race and for all kinds of outings that we do all throughout the year so that these boys have something fun and something that builds character. You don’t get that in a whole lot of places nowadays.”

Scouts will begin collecting trees at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, and will continue until all of the trees scheduled for that day have been picked up. Trees will be transported to C& S Tree Recycling Center in Springfield.

Customers should go to www.pack36.org to schedule their pickup and pay the $20 disposal fee. Remove all the decorations from the tree, take it out of its stand, and drag it to the end of the driveway or to a place that is clearly visible from the road.

“We’ll send customers a reminder e-mail the day before, and give them a call if we don’t see their tree outside when it’s supposed to be,” Alexander said.

These holiday trees will then be recycled into beneficial mulch, which is a safer alternative to burning this type of tree, which should never be done in a fireplace or wood stove. According to the USDA Forest Service, pines, firs and other evergreens have a high content of flammable turpentine oils. Burning the tree may contribute to creosote buildup and risk a chimney fire.
