YSAC hosting ‘Try Another Way’ art show

YELLOW SPRINGS — Nicki Strouss, manager of the Yellow Springs Pottery Studio, is working with a young group of students with disabilities to create pottery. These new pottery students, the “clay dogs,” are creating work that will be the centerpiece of the “Try Another Way” show at the Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery.

YSAC officials have called this show “Try Another Way — Redefining Disabilities” because they said everyone has abilities to succeed, and sometimes individuals have to find another way to accomplish goals.

“I approach teaching with the idea of meeting the students where they are and inviting them to move towards greater understanding of what, why and how to make things,” Strouss said. “In the Clay Dogs group, some students have people with them to help with gripping and manipulating, some students need more than one explanation of the steps in the process. This is common to the very young and old, the injured and a lot of people. Patience and pronunciation seem to help — with all people.”

To add to the show, YSAC officials sent out an open call for art for people with disabilities. Besides art that expresses feelings about living with a disability, some art will be created by having to try another way to create the art. YSAC officials said they will not know until the art is dropped off, 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 11, what art will be in the show.

“We can’t wait to see what comes in,” YSAC Gallery officials wrote in a press release about the show.

“When living with a disability, trying another way, then another way and maybe again trying another way, is a part of everyday life,” the release said. “It teaches you to be creative, and that is great for an artist.”

The reception will be held 6-9 p.m. Friday, March 17 at the YSAC Community Gallery, 111 Corry Street. For questions, contact Strouss at [email protected].
