Pinwheels spin for child abuse prevention

0

XENIA — To mark the beginning of April — National Child Abuse Prevention Month — Greene County Children Services has planted approximately 1,000 blue pinwheels in front of its offices at 601 Ledbetter Road.

The pinwheels are accompanied by a banner with the words “One Pinwheel. One Voice,” indicating that the pinwheels represent people, voices, that spoke out in concern for the safety of Greene County children in 2016.

Many local organizations have accepted Greene County Children Services’ invitation to help raise awareness of the problem of child abuse in the community. They are doing so by participating in one or more of the following activities during the month of April:

Superhero C.A.P.E. 5K Walk/Run – April 8

The Superhero C.A.P.E. 5K Walk/Run for Child Abuse Prevention and Elimination is the annual 5K event co-sponsored by Family Violence Prevention Center, Children Services, the Xenia Chrome Divas, the Board of Developmental Disabilities, and Michael’s House Child Advocacy Center. Two new sponsors have joined this year: Family Solutions Center and the Jacob Alan Barker Foundation. In addition to medals for the best times in various age categories, there will also be awards for the best individual and team superhero costumes. The 5K will be held on April 8. More details are available at www.cantstoprunningco.com.

Ohio Wears Blue Day – April 12

Greene County organizations are participating in this statewide event by encouraging their employees and/or members to wear the color blue on Wednesday, April 12. Children Services is providing lapel stickers to participants and encouraging them to e-mail photos for the agency to post on its Facebook page on Wear Blue Day.

Pinwheel Partners

Multiple Greene County organizations are hosting their own smaller pinwheel displays this month, along with a Pinwheel Partner sign. Displays can be indoors or outdoors. Children Services provides pinwheels and signs to participating Greene County organizations, which include the following this year: the Jamestown, Xenia, Yellow Springs, Fairborn and Cedarville Libraries; the Jamestown, Fairborn and Xenia sites of Kids Learning Place/Head Start; Records & Archives; Auditor’s Office; Greene County Public Health; Family Violence Prevention Center; GCBDD; United Way; MyGreeneRadio.com; Greene County Housing; Victim/Witness Division of the Prosecutor’s Office; Community Action Partnership; GMHA; Michael’s House Child Advocacy Center; Greene CATS; WPAFB Family Advocacy Program; Security National Bank (Xenia); and the Mental Health & Recovery Board.
