BEAVERCREEK — A gift to fit the legacy of a dedicated lifelong community member comes to fruition.

Soin Medical Center cut the ribbon on the new Dona Sheley Women’s Health Center in June thanks to Greene Medical Foundation and its underwriting of $450,000 from the Dona Sheley Endowment Fund.

The center is named after former Jamestown resident Dona Sheley, who served as a music teacher most of her working life. She was best known for her care and compassion for others and intended to show that care beyond her lifetime.

Sheley left a significant portion of her estate to Greene Medical Foundation. A portion of its proceeds was designated to provide cancer prevention and detection services for county residents.

“Dona Sheley was an extraordinary individual and an institution in Jamestown. The board saw this as a perfect opportunity to give her endowment the kind of meaning that celebrates her name today and into the future,” said Foundation Board Member Eric Murray.

The Dona Sheley Women’s Health Center now offers a comprehensive range of women’s health services in one convenient location. The center features a new Kettering Breast Evaluation Center, offering patients a relaxing Soin Medical Center. Services include a full range of breast diagnostic services including 3D mammography, and osteoporosis diagnostic services.

“Naming this center after her celebrates a great resident 20 years later,” said Murray. “This was the right thing for the board to do with this gift. It shows we are good stewards of her money.”

Murray explained the new women’s center has the latest technology.

“A specialized nuclear test with dye will enable professionals to see a problem right away,” said Murray. “And a quick diagnosis is important to treatment and to the patient knowing almost immediately if they have cancer. I am truly blown away by this incredible technology.”

A future goal of the center is to offer evening and weekend hours to women as the center grows.

“It’s a convenient destination where women will want to go to for their mammography,” he added. “The layout and finishes are meant to make it warm and more inviting.”

“This project is so great for Greene County and the women in surrounding service areas. I’m proud that our Foundation stepped up to provide this service for Greene County.”
