CEDARVILLE — More than 200 grandparents of students will get a taste of Cedarville University as they participate in Grandparents Day Friday, Nov. 2.

In celebration, the department of music and worship will perform two concerts: an all-choral concert performed 4 p.m. and an instrumental concert 7 p.m. Both concerts will be in the Jeremiah Chapel in the Dixon Ministry Center.

The Women’s Choir, Jubilate, Men’s Glee Club, Vocal Arts Ensemble and the Concert Chorale will perform at the all-choral concert in the afternoon under the direction of Dr. Lyle Anderson, senior professor of music; Dr. Roger O’Neel, associate professor of worship; and Beth Porter, chair of the department of music and worship. Altogether, 170 singers will perform.

“Within our very family oriented university, the department of music and worship considers it a privilege to present an enjoyable, entertaining and edifying concert for our guests as we honor them on Grandparents Day,” Anderson said.

The instrumental concert will feature the Wind Symphony and Jazz Band, under the leadership of Chester Jenkins, assistant professor of music. In addition, the university’s orchestra will perform under the direction of Carlos Elias, professor of music.

The Wind Symphony will present classic works including two settings of tunes by Percy Grainger, an early 20th-century Australian composer. The Jazz Band will premiere several new pieces with a higher difficulty level.

“Grainger’s music sounds simple and pretty but is actually incredibly complex,” Jenkins said. “Performing music outside of our normal comfort zone is fun and educational. And ending with the Jazz Band will put an exclamation point on the night of a lot of good music from all ensembles. It’s a big shift for the listener, but one that will put people in an energetic mood at the end of the concert.”

The concerts are open to students and their grandparents, parents, relatives and the entire Cedarville community and are free of charge.
