CENTERVILLE — Identity theft has increased over the past four years. But, in 2014, identity theft saw an increase of about 400,000 victims. Identity thieves stole $16 billion from consumers in 2014. To continue the fight against identity theft, the Better Business Bureau will be shredding documents free at Secure Your ID Day 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 hosted by Routsong Funeral Home Inc., 81 N. Main St.

Businesses and consumers are encouraged to bring up to five boxes or bags of documents to be shredded and take home tips needed to help protect yourself from identity theft. If one has more than five boxes, you’re welcome to go through the line more than once.

It’s an opportunity to do some cleaning up at work and home. It’s a safe way to discard credit card statements, old checks, IRS tax returns and any other sensitive material. Documents to be shredded should be removed from binders, but staples, paper clips, CDs and floppy discs are okay to be shredded. No electronics or batteries. Shredded documents will be recycled.

Partisipants don’t even have to get out of the car – just drive through. The BBB staff will unload your car, truck or trailer and you can watch it go right to the Confidential Material Destruction shredding trucks to be shredded on the spot. All shredded material will be recycled.

This is a unique effort to protect businesses and consumers from identity theft, emphasizing the importance of shredding documents and safeguarding personal information. In fact, the Dayton Area Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) presented your BBB with a PRism Award in May 2015 for Secure Your ID Day. In addition, previous attendees shared this positive feedback.

Come take advantage of this free service. Invite family and friends too. Last year, more than 23 tons of material was shredded locally, which was dropped off by almost 900 vehicles. For more information go to www.go.bbb.org/syid-dayton or call 937-610-2270.

This year’s sponsors include Routsong Funeral Home, Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio, Confidential Material Destruction, WHIO-TV, Greene County News Group and WHIO-AM.
