Presenters selected for Fairborn schools Hall of Honor event

FAIRBORN — Seven honorees will be inducted into the Fairborn City Schools’ Hall of Honor on April 29. The 29th enshrinement ceremony will start at 7 p.m. in the Fairborn High School Auditorium, followed by a reception in the Commons.

Sandra Crossan will present her friend Donald O. DeVault with the honor. Crossan graduated in 1977 from Perry High School in Massillon, Ohio and earned an executive secretarial degree and a network administration degree from Stark State College in North Canton, Ohio. She was employed at Summa Health Systems for 21 years. She is a member of the Licking Valley Heritage Society, American Cancer Society, An Act of Kindness and the Licking Valley Lions Club, Inc. of Ohio District 13-K, where she serves as webmaster and newsletter editor. An 18-year cancer survivor, she resides in Canton, Ohio and is the mother of three children, Christopher, Philip (Denise) and Teresa (Chris) Kirkpatrick and has nine grandchildren.

Robert D’Epiro will present his friend and former student Randy E. Phillips with the honor. D’Epiro graduated in 1959 from Central Catholic High School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and earned a bachelor of science in music education and a master of administration. He was employed for 31 years by Fairborn City Schools, where he was director of the high school bands and the district supervisor of music. A professional guitarist and vocalist, he is the author of Guitar Unplugged, has been in music education for 53 years and is still teaching elementary bands. He was inducted into the FCS Hall of Honor in 2004. He and his wife Dottie live in Centerville and have four daughters, fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

M. Joyce Dennis will present her friend and fellow educator Norma Watson Nikkola with the honor. Dennis graduated in 1955 from Frankfort (Ohio) High School, where she was salutatorian and a member of the National Honor Society. She earned a bachelor of science in education from Ohio University and a master’s in guidance and counseling from Miami University. She taught elementary classes at Central and South Schools and was a guidance counselor at Five Points and Baker Junior High Schools, retiring in 1996 after 37 years in education. A Fairborn resident, she is a duplicate bridge Gold Life Master and a member of education associations, Eastern Star and D.A.R. She was inducted into the FCS Hall of Honor in 2010.

Michael J. McCarthy will present his friend and former teacher Michael L. Seewer with the honor. McCarthy graduated in 1987 from Fairborn High School, where he was a member of the speech and debate team. He earned a bachelor of arts in 1991 and a master’s in history in 1992 from Marshall University. He is the chief information officer for Marshall University and for Marshall Health, the physician faculty practice plan. He had a scholarly article featured in the October 2015 issue of Medical Science Educator. He is the U.S. Soccer’s State Referee Administrator for West Virginia, responsible for 700 soccer referees. He and his wife Diane have two sons, Jameson and Evan, and they reside in Huntington, West Virginia.

Ron McDermott will present his friend and fellow educator Albert E. Gilbert with the honor. McDermott graduated in 1963 from Fairborn High School and earned a bachelor of science in education and a master of science in school administration. He was assistant principal of Five Points Junior High School, principal of Five Points Elementary School and assistant principal of Fairborn High School. He is currently an instructor in the Wright State College of Education and Human Services. He was Sweet Corn Festival king in 2005, inducted into the FCS Hall of Honor in 2012 and has spoken at many conferences. He has two children, Caryn and Michael and a granddaughter, Madison. He and his wife Barb reside in Fairborn.

Brent Naughton will present his father William F. Naughton with the honor. Brent graduated in 1991 from Fairborn High School, where he was art editor of the yearbook, a member of the baseball and basketball teams and owned The Dugout Baseball Card Shop. In 1994 he graduated from the Cincinnati Academy of Design and he has worked in the package design industry for clients such as P & G and Hershey’s. He has also illustrated two children’s books. He currently works as a sports artist and has had his artwork displayed at the Dayton Art Institute, Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Roberto Clemente Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He and his wife Michelle reside in Cincinnati with their two dogs.

Paul Newman, Sr. will present his friend and colleague Ellen Slone-Farthing with the honor. Newman graduated in 1960 from Conneaut (Ohio) High School and received a bachelor of science and a master’s degree in english from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He was the sports information director and assistant to the president at Edinboro and from 1985-2006 was the senior associate athletics director at Wright State University. He was the president of the Fairborn Rotary Club and from 2009-2016, the executive director of the Fairborn Area Chamber of Commerce. He and Connie, his wife of 50 years, reside in Beavercreek and have three children, Paul Jr., Michele and Scott and two grandchildren, Sam and Mya.
