BELLBROOK — Richard Cunningham was a soldier during the Revolutionary War who enlisted for a period for three years with the Pennsylvania Militia. He served at the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. He also wintered at Valley Forge where he drove a team of horses and served as a rifleman in scouting and spying parties.

After his discharge, he served an additional year as a rifleman and then another nine months, for a total of nearly four years. He re-enlisted and fought in the War of 1812. He moved to Bellbrook where he ran a hotel and served as Constable of Sugarcreek Township.
