ROWING

Stout on silver medal team

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Fairborn resident helped the Dayton Boat Club masters rowing program take a silver medal in the Grand Regatta of the State Games of Michigan Saturday, June 25. The team finished .19 second behind gold medalist Ann Arbor Rowing Club in the mixed eight-oared 1,000-meter sprint.

In the four-oared 1,000-meter sprints, DBC took fourth in the women’s race and fifth in the men’s. Marion Stout of Fairborn rowed in both the mixed eight and the women’s four.

The regatta, held on the Grand River in Grand Rapids, Mich., attracted 245 entries from 27 clubs from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio. It’s a signature event of the seventh annual State Games of Michigan, which convenes athletes from 42 different sports in events statewide from June 18 to Aug. 6 for its summer games.

Junior Golf League starts June 29

XENIA — WGC Golf Course will also have its Wednesday Junior Golf League starting at 10:45 a.m. June 29. This nine-hole league will continue each Wednesday through July. Golfers with some playing experience are welcome to compete. The league was started back in 1975 by Jim Beaver and Garay Goecke who will supervise play each week. Reds hosting ‘Night of Their Own’

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds baseball organization will be hosting the third annual A Night of Their Own — Baseball 101 event from 4:30-9:30 p.m. July 21 at Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati. The event is a chance for women of all ages to eat, play and learn with Reds coaches, broadcasters, staff and special guests to get an inside look at the game of baseball.

A dinner buffet will be served from 5:30 -6:30 p.m., followed by the chance to throw on the pitcher’s mound, shag fly balls in the outfield and even take a few swings at live pitches in the batter’s box. Attendees will meet Reds manager Bryan Price, and broadcasters Marty and Thom Brennaman. Attendees will also get baseball tips from members of the Reds coaching staff, including third base coach and former Cincinnati Reds player Billy Hatcher.

Cost is $175 which includes an upscale buffet with open bar, an upgraded gift bag featuring an exclusive ladies Reds watch and a Reds wine tumbler, a ticket to an upcoming Reds baseball game, and an extensive guided tour of the ball park. All proceeds will benefit outreach programs of the Reds Community Fund.

Baseball Buddies program back at Fifth Third Field

DAYTON — Visit your local Kroger store to sign up for a chance to be a Baseball Buddy! Kids ages 7-13 who are randomly selected as winners will get the experience of a lifetime. To enter, look for the display at your local Kroger store at the Customer Service Desk.

The Kroger Baseball Buddies experience includes: Hanging out in the dugout during pre-game to meet the Dragons players, Getting autographs and photos with the Dragons team, Being introduced over the PA like a player, Running out on the field with the team before that day’s game.

Kroger Baseball Buddies will also receive several gifts including: A replica Dragons jersey, Dragons baseball hat, Drawstring backpack, Dragons pen and baseball to be autographed and more. One baseball buddy will win a free kickball game to be played at Fifth Third Field with 20 of their friends and Dragons players.
