RIVERSIDE — Carroll High School has promoted former varsity assistant coach Cecilia Grosselin to the position of head coach of the girls’ basketball program.

Grosselin began her career at Carroll in 2000 as the head coach of the girls freshman basketball team and varsity softball team, in addition to her role as a mathematics teacher. Grosselin left Carroll in 2001 to move to Germany where she served as head varsity coach for women’s basketball at Ramstein American High School, a United States Department of Defense school in Germany. Grosselin’s teams won two Division I European Championships.

After relocating back to the Dayton area in 2008, Grosselin rejoined the Carroll staff as a math teacher and junior varsity girls’ basketball coach. In 2012, she became the top assistant to former coach Rob Berry.

“I had the privilege of working with Coach Berry for the past eight years,” Grosselin said in an emailed statement. “It is an honor to be given the opportunity to lead the girls basketball program. I look forward to carrying on the tradition of exceptional basketball success that is associated with this program.”

Carroll Athletic Director Scott Molfenter said he firmly believes Grosselin will continue Carroll’s athletic excellence.

“She is taking the lead of a program with a history of success, and we are confident she will continue its tradition of hard work and exciting basketball. Coach Grosselin will be an excellent role model and mentor to our student athletes!” he said.

Berry, 64, died in July from cancer. He had coached at Carroll High School for 14 years. In that time, he won four league titles in the now-defunct Mid-Miami League (from 2003 through 2006), three Girls Greater Catholic League championships (Grey North Division in 2009-‘10; 2011-‘12; and 2012-‘13) and was the GGCL Coach of the Year in 2009-‘10.

“Coach Berry’s battle with cancer was very difficult for our student athletes in the girl’s basketball program. Coach Grosselin did an extraordinary job of keeping the girls together and playing at a high level. Her experience and vision for the future made her the ideal choice to lead the program into its next chapter of success,” said Carroll Principal Matt Sableski.

The Patriots open the 2016-‘17 season against Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown in the Tip-Off Classic (Time, Date, and Site TBA). The first home game is scheduled for Nov. 29 against The Miami Valley School.
