FAIRBORN — On Senior Night at Community Park, the Fairborn girls tennis team won its first Greater Western Ohio Conference division championship, beating West Carrollton, 5-0.
The win earns the Skyhawks a 5-5 regular season finish, a game ahead of Riverside Stebbins in the American South Division.
Fairborn lost just nine games in cruising to Tuesday’s win.
Brooklyn Hunter, Acadia Wulf and Kyla Secrest cruised to singles wins, losing just one game between them.
“I’m so proud of these three young ladies,” coach Doug Coy said. “They went through an emotional ceremony with their parents, friends, and teammates, then went out and walked all over their opponents.”
The first doubles team of Shayna Osborne and Preslee Chapman won, 6-1, 6-4, while the no. 2 team of Megan Koonce and Dakota Thacker won, 6-1, 6-0. After the matches ended, Fairborn Athletic Director Micah Harding surprised the team with the championship trophy.
“This was an awesome night,” Coy said. “We had a wonderful Senior Night ceremony. I can’t thank Rhonda Hunter (Brooklyn’s mom) for putting everything together, and all of our parents who pitched in to make it a special night. We had lots of people there. I’ve never seen so many people at a tennis match like this before. Former coach Zach Amand was there to see the girls he got started, Terry Miller was there to congratulate everybody, and then when Mr. Harding told me he had the trophy to present to us if we won, well that was just extra special. What a great thing for him to do for us so we could share it with our families and friends.”
The nine seniors on the team are Hunter, Secrest, Koonce, Wulf, Thacker, Osborne, Chapman, Jayna Varner and Gabrielle Singer.
“We have a great group of girls, not just our seniors but our whole team has really gotten close the past two years, and that makes the season that much more enjoyable,” Coy said. “They have fun together, pull for each other, and just are great to be around. I can’t tell you how much we are going to miss these seniors. They have set the bar pretty high for the classes that follow behind them.”
Fairborn is now 11-10 overall and was scheduled to host Dayton Stivers on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
