Beavers in Flyin’ to the Hoop

BEAVERCREEK — The Beavercreek boys basketball team will play in the 15th Premier Health Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational. The Beavers will play Hilliard Bradley at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14 at Trent Arena in Kettering. Bradley is ranked No. 10 in Ohio according to the Flyin’ to the Hoop’s preseason Division I poll.

Beavercreek’s appearance will be its sixth, and fourth time in the last five years. Bradley was 1-1 in last season’s post-season tournament.

Ruff named defensive player

INDIANAPOLIS — Senior goalkeeper Katie Ruff of the Wright State women’s soccer team has been selected as the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for the third week this season.

Ruff recorded five saves as the Raiders defeated Valparaiso 2-1 Saturday night at Alumni Field. Previously named the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 6 and Oct. 3, she is currently tied for the league lead with four shutouts, tied for second with 67 saves and is seventh with a 1.30 goals-against average.

Wright State (6-6-2), currently is atop the Horizon League standings with a 4-0-1 mark, travels to Milwaukee for a key league contest at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

Raiders sweep weekly awards

INDIANAPOLIS — The Wright State men’s soccer team swept this week’s Horizon League awards as senior forward Peguy Ngatcha was named the Offensive Player of the Week while senior defender Jake Stovall was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Ngatcha scored the game-winning goal at the 40:56 mark of the first half as the Raiders picked up a key league 1-0 win on Saturday at Oakland. He connected on a shot from 20 yards out as he beat the goalkeeper to the right. Ngatcha currently leads the league with his nine goals and 20 points. The goals are tied for ninth in Division I and the points are 12th.

Stovall helped lead the WSU defense to its fifth shutout in the last six matches with the Oakland win. In five league matches, Wright State has allowed one goal, in posting a 0.19 goals-against average.

Wright State (7-4-1, 3-1-1 Horizon) is back on the road for a league match at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at Detroit Mercy.

‘Creek runners among Royals Challenge best

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — The University of the Cumberlands men’s cross country team participated in the Queens Royals XC Challenge. The men would compete in the 8k run. The men had some strong performances and would finish 11 out of 39 teams.

First to cross the line was Samuel Beal of Beavercreek. He finished fifth out of 368 in a time of 24:23.1, making this his third top-5 finish, to continue his impressive season. James MacPherson of Beavercreek finished with a time of 28:18.6.

Hockey holding alumni golf outing

BEAVERCREEK — The 2016-17 season marks the 20th anniversary of the Beavercreek varsity hockey program and in celebration, the program will hold the first Beavercreek Varsity Hockey Alumni Friends & Family Golf Scramble. It will be held Saturday, Oct. 22 at Locust Hills Golf Course in Springfield. Included with the $80 entry fee are 18 holes of golf, cart, driving range, box lunch, dinner, and the chance to participate in a silent auction, raffle, and some fun games and competitions on and off the course. Dinner without golf is $20.

Registration and use of the driving range starts 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner and awards will be at approximately 6 p.m. highlighted by the introduction of the new Beavercreek varsity hockey head coach and former U.S. Air Force Academy NCAA Division I player, Brig.
