Fairborn rowers win bronze

COLUMBUS — The Dayton Boat Club masters rowing team earned a bronze medal, Oct. 30 at the 33rd annual Jack Speakmon Memorial Regatta.

With two Fairborn rowers and a Fairborn coxswain, the team’s women’s four boat finished third behind two boats from Western Reserve in Cleveland and ahead of a Pittsburgh crew and a boat from the home club, the Greater Columbus Rowing Association.

The club’s mixed eight took sixth, and the men’s four took fifth. All of the races were 5,000 meters, or 3.1 miles.

The Speakmon Regatta attracted more than 300 entries from 30 clubs and collegiate programs in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Ontario. DBC team members competing Oct. 30 included Pete Hoshor and Timmy Wells of Centerville; Lisa Wilson of Dayton; Vince Leopold, Amy O’Connor and Jane Wittmann of Oakwood; Dean Pocius and Maureen Schlangen of Kettering; Marion Stout and Vicki Schwab of Fairborn; and Alexandria Vaughan of Wilmington. Coxswains for the day’s races were Becky Rounds of Dayton and Judi DeSimio of Fairborn.

Dayton Boat Club is part of Dayton Regional Rowing, the nation’s only Community Olympic Development Program in the sport.
