Local teams ready for GMVWA tournament

FAIRBORN — The annual Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Holiday Wrestling Tournament begins today at the Wright State Nutter Center.

Sixty-four teams with 633 wrestlers will participate including Bellbrook, Carroll, Fairborn, Greeneview and Xenia.

Area teams saw a little bit of success last year as Bellbrook senior Tyler Wiederholt was the 182-pound champ, and Xenia senior Cody Smith third at 220. Several other underclassmen placed last year and are expected to compete again this year.

Dublin Coffman won the Division I team title with 189 points. Delaware Hayes was second with 150 points. Graham is the defending Division II and III champ. It had eight individual champions and two in second place to total 353 points. West Branch was a distant second with 114.5 points.

Bellbrook was the top-finishing Greene County team, coming in 14th in Division II and III.

Brackets were not available as of press time. However Bellbrook has entered nine wrestlers, Carroll 11, Fairborn 10, Greeneview six and Xenia 11.

Only six teams have filled all 14 weight classes according to the tournament website: Bellefontaine, Graham, Miami Trace, Pickerington Central, Upper Sandusky and Wapakoneta.

Action begins 11 a.m. and continues throughout the day. It resumes 11 a.m. Wednesday with the finals beginning 5 p.m. Matches for first, third, fifth and seventh places will be contested simultaneously. Tuesday and Wednesday admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students. Admission Wednesday after 5 p.m. is $5 for adults and $4 for students.

All-session passes are available for $15 for adults and $12 for students.
