Raiders nab two wins

FAIRBORN — The Wright State University baseball team enjoyed a home opening doubleheader with a pair of wins against nonleague foes, Ohio and Dayton, Thursday, March 9 at Nischwitz Stadium.

Down to its final strike in the ninth, the Raiders rallied to force extra innings in Thursday’s evening contest. Then after Dayton scored a run in the 12th, WSU rallied again with two runs to pull out a dramatic 5-4 decision.

The Flyers were in control for most of the first innings, scoring once in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. That was the same score with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the ninth against Dayton starter Austin Cline.

J.D. Orr, however, started the first WSU rally with a four-pitch walk and Matt Morrow did the same to force a pitching change. Reliever Kevin Piersol nearly had Gabe Snyder struck out if not for a foul tip. On the next pitch, Snyder lifted a fly ball to right that went over the fence for a three-run home run, his first of the season, to force extra innings.

It stayed that way until the Flyers scored an unearned run in the 12th, only to see the Raiders come up with an answer in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Brandon Giltrow singled just out of the reach of a leaping Flyers shortstop into left and 2016 Xenia Scout Adrian Marquez followed with the walk-off, game-winning two-run home run to right, his third of the year.

Alex Anders (1-0) picked up the win by pitching the final two innings, striking out two. Jeremy Randolph was outstanding in relief, allowing no runs, three hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Marquez and Seth Gray each had two hits for Wright State (9-5).

In the early game, Wright State broke open a close game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Raiders defeated Ohio in their home opener at Nischwitz Stadium 6-1.

WSU opened the scoring with two runs in the second. With one out, Seth Gray singled up the middle and stole second. One out later, Kevin Whatley reached on an infield hit to put runners on the corners for Brandon Giltrow, who delivered a two-run double down the right field line.

The Bobcats, though, cut the deficit in half with a run in the sixth and it stayed 2-1 until Wright State came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Zach Weatherford led off the frame with a walk and following a JD Orr hit to left, both runners stole a base. Gabe Snyder then singled up the middle to plate both runs.

After a two-base error, Daniel Arthur singled in Snyder and Kevin Whatley squeezed in Gray with the final run.

Ryan Weiss (2-0) earned the win with six strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five. Derek Hendrixson fanned two in pitching the seventh and Danny Sexton picked up the save, his first of the season, by going the final two, striking out two.

At the plate, Giltrow had two hits along with the two RBI while Orr had two hits and Gray scored twice.
