Schlater honored by Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE — Shannon Schlater of Fairborn, was honored April 20 at Ohio Wesleyan University’s 13th annual Dale J. Bruce Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner.

The celebration recognized Battling Bishop athletes from Ohio Wesleyan’s 23 varsity sports for their academic and athletic successes during the 2016-2017 school year.

Schlater earned the Top Ten Award (based on the student-athlete’s impact on their family, team, university, and Delaware community). Schlater competed in Battling Bishop Volleyball.

Ohio Wesleyan is part of Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Learn more about Ohio Wesleyan athletics at www.battlingbishops.com.

Pfeffer named Academic All-Horizon

INDIANAPOLIS — Wright State University senior Kate Pfeffer has been named to the Softball Academic All-Horizon League Team, it was announced Friday May 5 by the league office.

Pfeffer (Clayton Northmont), who has a 3.74 grade-point average in Language Arts Education, has appeared in 39 games with 31 starts so far this season, making starts at catcher and in left field. She drove in two runs and scored twice in the second game of a doubleheader at Green Bay on April 1 and scored two runs in the second game of a twinbill at Cleveland State on April 8.

In a three-game series sweep of Northern Kentucky earlier this week, Pfeffer scored a pair of runs in the opener on May 4 and had three hits in the May 5 doubleheader.

Wright State (20-26, 14-7 Horizon) heads to Valparaiso this weekend for a three-game series to wrap up the regular season.

DARF Night rained out at Shady Bowl

DEGRAFF — Saturday’s May 6 racing action at Shadybowl Speedway has been cancelled due to rainy weather. The night of racing was DARF Night, where members of the Dayton Auto Racing Fans club received free admission to the track with their DARF membership card. Reds offer Helms bobblehead

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame & Museum’s 2017 bobblehead series, presented by Dinsmore & Shohl LLP, continues in May with Reds Hall of Famer Tommy Helms.

The 1966 National League Rookie of the Year, Helms was a two-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove winner, and was a key piece in the 1971 trade that brought Joe Morgan to the Reds. Helms was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 1979.

The bobbleheads are free with regular-price admission to the Reds Hall of Fame (or a Scotts Great American Ball Park tour) and will be available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of May, while supplies last.

Only 6,000 bobbleheads have been produced and there is a limit of one bobblehead per visitor per day.

Girls basketball camp

BEAVERCREEK — The 17th Beavercreek Girls Basketball Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. June 5-8 at Beavercreek High School. Cost is $90 per camper. Cost is $80 for any camper who registers before May 20. Girls in grades 1-8 are eligible for the camp, which will be hosted by BHS girls basketball coach and three-time Ohio coach of the year Ed Zink and BHS girls basketball’s all-time leading scorer Amanda (Reese) Crockett. Current and past BHS basketball players will also be on hand. The last day of camp, June 8, is Mother-Daughter Camp Day. Family members are invited to participate.

Junior Golf Camp, league in June

XENIA — WGC Golf Course in Xenia will host its Miami Valley Junior Golf Association 31st Annual Junior Golf Camp, from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. June 19-22 for boys and girls ages 8-17. Campers will receive daily instruction on stroke technique, golf etiquette, the rules of golf. Golfers will also get time on the practice tee and putting greens to work on stroke technique. All golfers will also play daily on the WGC Golf Course. Long-time Golf Camp Director and former Stebbins High School golf coach Jim Beaver will be joined by co-director Roy Cassidy (head Girls Golf Coach at Carroll High School), Beavercreek varsity boys golf coach Chris Nartker, Stebbins boys golf Coaches Rick Pagniano and Shane Williams, and former Trevecca Nazarene University All-American golfer Betsy Beaver, who is now the varsity girls golf coach at Westerville North. WGC will also have its Wednesday Junior Golf League starting at 10:45 a.m. June 28. This nine-hole league will continue each Wednesday through July. Golfers with some playing experience are welcome to compete. Information about the league can also be found at www.wgcgolfcourse.com.

XHS Class of ‘73 golf outing June 17

XENIA — The fifth PLAY IT FORWARD golf outing/scholarship fundraiser, hosted by the Xenia High School Class of 1973, is scheduled for Saturday June 17 at Sebastian Hills Golf Club. Golf registration includes a light breakfast, a full picnic-style lunch and beverages, in addition to prizes and raffles. The event is open to the public with an early registration discount applied until June 1.

The goal of the fundraiser and scholarship award is to give back to current XHS graduates in need. The Class of ’73 will award its fourth $4,000 scholarship to a deserving 2017 XHS graduate at the Awards Assembly in May. Scholarship monies are acquired from hole sponsorships ($100), title sponsors (ranging from $250 – $1,000), monetary/gift donations and, of course, golfers. Recent outings have been attended by graduates representing XHS classes from 1968 through 2004, in addition to several of our scholarship recipients.

Jamestown Chamber golf outing in May

JAMESTOWN — The annual Jamestown Chamber of Commerce golf outing will take place Friday May 19 at Sebastian Hills Golf Course, 1100 Knoll Haven Rd. in Xenia. The outing will start at 11 a.m., with registration opening at 10am. Come early to take advantage of the free driving range and putting green privileges, as well as getting a hot dog or two courtesy of Countryside Propane

Participants will be able to enjoy beverages and snacks, courtesy of the Chamber, and when the golf is over Kelley’s Café will be providing all participants and volunteers a wonderful meal at the golf course. Registration information for sponsorship and playing, including payment options, are available on the Chamber’s website (www.jtchamber.com) or by emailing [email protected]. The deadline for registration is Friday, May 12.

The annual golf outing is the main fundraising activity for the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce which allows the Chamber to provide various activities, programs and scholarships to the Jamestown and surrounding communities.

Tornadoes football fundraiser, May 12

XENIA — The Xenia Tornadoes semi-professional football team will host a fundraiser from 5-9 p.m. Friday May 12 at the Chipotle restaurant at 1620 West Park Square. Tell the cashier that you’re supporting the team and 50 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Xenia Tornadoes semi-pro football team.
