Greeneview blanks Franklin
JAMESTOWN — Greeneview lost just five games in three singles matches en route to a 5-0 non-league win over Franklin Sept. 6. Ellie Adkins won, 6-2, 6-1, at first singles, Molly Nixon won, 6-2, 6-0, at second singles, and Sara Givens won, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles.
Katy Hilbig and Erin Miller won, 7-6, 6-3, at first doubles, while Brooklyn Biggs and Marinda Shoemaker won, 6-2, 6-0 at second doubles.
Fairborn gets first win
FAIRBORN — The Skyhawks won their first game Sept. 6 on second-half goals from Hannah Johnson and Lauren Thomas. Aubree Duncan assisted on the game-winner. Keeper Jenna Diehl recorded five saves for the 1-5 Fairborn team.
Greeneview edges Carroll
JAMESTOWN — Greeneview’s volleyball team is 7-2 overall after a 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 24-26, 15-5 non-league win over Carroll Sept. 6.
Mady Brittingham had 16 kills, while Ashley Schloss added nine. Bryce Ratliff led with 25 assists, while Maddie Hines was the top defensive player with 11 digs.
The reserve team also won, improving to 4-2 after the 25-23, 25-23 win.
Bellbrook reserve golfers win
BELLBROOK — Cameron Early was medalist with a 49 and Ryan Swanson carded a 50 in a 205-207 loss to Troy in reserve boys golf Sept. 6. David Duckro shot 53 and Ryan Cross 55.
Fairborn nets another tennis win
FAIRBORN — The Skyhawks are 3-9 overall after a 4-1 non-league tennis win over Waynesville. Tiana Thomas won, 6-4, 6-1, at third singles, Katelyn Byczkowski and Amanda Wilson won, 6-0, 6-3, at first doubles, and Rita Chien returned to the lineup and teamed up for the first time with Abby Lafferty for 6-1, 6-3 win at second doubles. No. 1 singles player Paige Murry won by forfeit when Waynesville’s player could not play due to an injury.
Fairborn lost, 5-0, to Greenville Sept. 5, winning 10 games.
Fairborn was scheduled to play Sept. 7 at Trotwood-Madison.
Greeneview golfers top Carroll
JAMESTOWN — Mason Witt shot a 34 to lead Greeneview to a 181-191 win over Carroll, Sept. 6 at Sebastian Hills. Eli Beekman fired a 46 and Matt Hovan 49 to lead Greeneview.
Tyler Goecke shot a 41 to pace Carroll.
Second half dooms Fairborn boys
FAIRBORN — The Fairborn boys soccer team lost, 3-2, to Sidney, Sept. 5. It was a 1-1 score at halftime, which was Fairborn’s fourth halftime tie in six matches. The Skyhawks have yet to win one of those. Tyler Manning scored Fairborn’s first goal from a corner kick sent across from Keegan Dierker. In the second half, Zayne Pacifico made a strong run down the left side of the field and connected with Josh Greene for the team’s second goal.
CU Jackets serve up 9-0 victory
INSTITUTE, W.Va. — It was all Yellow Jackets in the men’s tennis season opener as Cedarville cruised to a 9-0 win Sept. 6 at West Virginia State.
CU dropped just 11 games during a match in which three freshmen were making their collegiate debuts. The Jackets won all but four games in doubles. The pairings were No. 1 Matt Brumbaugh and Jonathan Class (8-1), No. 2 Alex Totten and Ryan Cvammen (8-2), and No. 3 Philip Brumbaugh and Chris Tsibouris (8-1).
All six singles matches were decided in straight sets. The line-up from top-to-bottom included Matt Brumbaugh, Totten, Class, Cvammen, Hoover, and Philip Brumbaugh. They play at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at Franciscan.
OVU spoils Yellow Jacket opener
CEDARVILLE — Ohio Valley did all of its damage in the first half and blanked Cedarville, 4-0, in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest to begin the Yellow Jackets’ home schedule on Sept. 6.
The Fighting Scots scored twice within 63 seconds early in the game and then tacked on two more. The visitors out-shot Cedarville 25-6 overall and 10-3 on goal. They also had a 7-0 margin in corner kicks. The Yellow Jackets drop to 0-3 and 0-1 G-MAC.
The Jackets continue G-MAC play at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at Lake Erie.
Scots clamp down on Cedarville
CEDARVILLE — Ohio Valley limited the Yellow Jackets women’s college soccer team to one shot on goal and came away with a 3-0 victory in the G-MAC women’s soccer opener Sept. 6 for both schools.
The Fighting Scots, 2-0 overall and 1-0 G-MAC, scored the only goal they needed in the 18th minute. It remained a 1-0 difference until two quick tallies just 38 seconds apart in the 74th and 75 minutes. The shot differential was 13-3 overall and 7-1 on goal in favor of the visitors.
Cedarville enters a four-game road trip at 2-0 and 0-1 G-MAC.
Yellow Jackets tee off season
BLACKLICK — Jared Hoelzen finished in the top 25 and Cedarville opened the 2017-18 men’s golf season Sept. 5 with an eighth-place showing at the Ohio Dominican Kickoff Classic.
Hoelzen tied for 24th individually with rounds of 79-74 at the Jefferson Country Club. As a team, the Yellow Jackets totaled 317-314. Findlay took a four-shot victory with 292-298 and Indianapolis was the runner-up at 297-297.
Freshmen Isaac Wood (79-78) and Kyle Tillinghast (79-79) made their collegiate debuts. Carter Ehms shot 83-83 and Benjamin Sheard, another freshman, had 80-87. Three other Jackets played as individuals. The trio included Hayden James (75-81), Jacob Adams (82-84), and Mitchell Creamer (81-89).
Cedarville returns to the course Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 18-19 at the G-MAC Fall Invitational.
Player Garlock honored
CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University goalkeeper Allison Garlock has been selected the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Women’s National Player of the Week on Sept. 5. It’s the first such honor for a Cedarville University women’s soccer player.
The sophomore from Lebanon was also chosen the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Garlock totaled 11 saves in posting back-to-back home shutouts, the first of her career, to open the season. She stopped five shots as the Lady Jackets jumped on Saginaw Valley State early for a 4-0 result. Two nights later, Garlock came back with six saves during a 1-0 victory against Lewis.
Sullivan G-MAC Athlete of the Week
CEDARVILLE — Ethan Sullivan is the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the 2017 campaign on Sept. 5.
Sullivan, a junior from Springfield led the Yellow Jackets at the Queen City Invitational with a time of 15:39 for the 5,000 meters. The mark rates No. 4 all-time in the G-MAC for the men’s cross country 5K. Cedarville placed fourth in the six-team field. The other five competing schools were all Division-I programs.
Spears paces CU at invite
WEST CHESTER — Alaina Spears turned in a career-best 5K to lead the U.S. Track & field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II No. 12 Lady Jackets to a fourth-place finish Sept. 2 at the Queen City Invitational.
Voice of America Park was site of the season opener which featured six Division I programs and Cedarville in the seven-team field. Spears was timed in 18:04 to place eighth out of 105. Christy Jesson finished 19th in 18:33 and Kayla Casaletto 20th in 18:34.
Olivia Kundo came in 31st in 18:55, while Grace Norman made her collegiate cross country debut placing 33rd in 18:58. Jordan Penrod was 35th in 18:59, and Rachel Sweeney was 53rd in 19:42. Dayton won the team title with 19 points and was followed by Xavier (53), Cincinnati (78), and Cedarville (105).
Men’s soccer falls at Ohio State
COLUMBUS — The Wright State men’s soccer team fell Sept. 4 at Ohio State, 2-0.
Ohio State jumped out with a quick goal by Nial Logie at 12:32. The Raiders had three shots in the first 45, one each by A.J. Paterson, Brayden McNitt and Alec Philippe.
The Raiders (1-2-1) played the Buckeyes (3-1) tight throughout the second half. Wright State finished with 10 shots overall, led by Luke Treadway and Sam DeRoy with two each. OSU ended with 12 shots as WSU goalie Joel Sundell finished with three saves.
The team plays Oakland 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9.
Women’s soccer falls at West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Wright State women’s soccer lost, 2-0, Sept. 4 at No. 6 West Virginia.
Coming off a victory over No. 1 Penn State, Sept. 1, West Virginia wasted no time scoring in the third minute of the game on a penalty kick by senior forward Michaela Abam.
The second half continued much like the first half with West Virginia (4-1) putting constant pressure on the Wright State defense notching 33 total shots with nine on goal. The game remained 1-0 until the 82nd minute when senior defender Amandine Pierre-Louis scored on a rebound off of a penalty kick. WSU goalkeeper Maddie Jewell ended the game with seven total saves on nine shots on goal.
The Raiders (3-3) will be back in action 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at Alumni Field as they take on Valparaiso in a non-conference match.
Bucs hosting sock drive
XENIA — The Xenia High School Athletic Department and student council are helping out the people devastated by Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area. Through Tuesday, Sept. 12, collection boxes will be placed at all Xenia Community Schools for the collection of new socks.
All ages of socks will be accepted. Students from the school that brings in the most number of pairs will receive one ticket to any one home athletic competition.
