VALPARAISO, Ind. — The Wright State Golf team placed first at the Crusader Classic hosted by Valparaiso University at Sand Creek Country Club to open the season Sept. 5-6. It was the first time the Raiders won a tournament since April 6, 2010 when they topped the Bluegrass Spring Classic in Georgetown, KY.

After jumping out to a good start after round one, the Raiders were tested by some tough conditions as well as the mental and physical test of playing 36 competitive holes in one day and gave back some of their lead in the afternoon round.

Entering the final day, they held a four shot advantage over Bradley University. The weather proved to be an even bigger challenge on day two as temperatures were in the mid 50’s with a steady rain coming down for the majority of the final round.

“We talked about the weather conditions, and we knew that we could be mentally stronger than the other teams in the field,” first-year head coach Brian Arlinghaus said. “We approached the final round with a blue-color mentality, and it served us well.”

The Raiders had three players finish inside the top 10 in individual scoring; Chris Rossi, Austin Schoonmaker, and Bryce Haney. Schoonmaker led the team with an overall score of 224 and a final round of -2, putting him in a tie for third individually.

Wright State will next be in action Sept. 11-12 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.

Team Scores: 1. Wright State, 303-314-297=914; 2. Bradley, 312-309-297=918; 3. Valparaiso, 312-309-300=921; 4. Loyola (IL), 325-298-301=924.
