Wright State women’s schedule announced

FAIRBORN — Coming off a 25-win season that included its first-ever win in the WNIT, the Wright State women’s basketball team announced a difficult schedule that will challenge a mixture of returning players as well as newcomers. The Raiders return All-League player Chelsea Welch as well as Horizon League Coach of the Year Katrina Merriweather.

Indianapolis: The Greyhounds come to town Nov. 1 for an exhibition game. UIndy went 17-12 last year with a 9-9 record in the GLVC.

Northwestern Ohio: The Raiders will open the regular season at the University of Northwestern Ohio on Nov. 10.

Eastern Illinois: The Raiders open at home against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 14. The Panthers, a former Mid-Continent Conference foe of the Raiders, went 9-19 overall last year with five wins in Ohio Valley Conference play. The teams have played nine total times with WSU winning five.

Missouri: Wright State travels to play at Missouri two nights later on Nov. 16. The Tigers went 22-11 with an SEC record of 11-5. UM won the two previous meetings.

Stetson: WSU opens the Savannah Invitational in Georgia against Stetson on Nov. 21. The Hatters also played in the WNIT, finishing with a record of 26-7 and 13-1 in the Big South. The Raiders won the only meeting between the teams.

Providence: Providence will provide the opposition in the second round on Nov. 22. The Big East school finished 12-18 and 4-14 in league play a year ago.

Richmond: The Raiders end the Savannah Invitational as they play against Richmond on Nov. 23. The Spiders went 13-17 and 7-98 in the Atlantic 10.

Tennessee Tech: Wright State comes home to host Tennessee Tech of the Ohio Valley Conference on Dec. 1. The Raiders won last year’s tilt 65-54 in Cookeville, TN to open the season. It was the only meeting between the teams. TT finished 2016 with a 10-20 record.

Chicago State: On Dec. 3, the Raiders host Chicago State. WSU leads the overall series 11-1, including a win last year’s game 71-65 at CSU. The Cougars went winless last season.

Kent State: The Raiders travel north to play at Kent State on December 7. The Flash won last year’s game 79-69 and lead the overall series 3-1. KSU went 19-13 last year and played in the first round of the WNIT.

Cincinnati Christian: On December 14, the Raiders will host Cincinnati Christian, a team WSU beat last year 85-61 at the Nutter Center.

Belmont: Wright State hits the road to play in Nashville where they will take on Belmont on Dec. 18. The Bruins won 27 games last year, winning the Ohio Valley Conference. BU advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they lost to Kentucky in the first round 73-70.

Georgia: The non-conference schedule ends with a trip to George to play the Bulldogs on Dec. 21. UGA went 16-15 overall and 7-9 in the SEC.

Green Bay: Horizon League play starts as last year’s top two teams square off at the Nutter Center on Dec. 28. GB went 27-6 and lost to Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The teams will meet in Green Bay on Feb. 3.

Milwaukee: The Panthers posted a record of 22-12 last year and advanced to the third round of the WBI. The Raiders won both meetings a year ago. The teams play at the Nutter Center on Dec. 30 will meet a second time on Feb. 1 in Milwaukee.

Oakland: WSU will travel to the Detroit area on Jan. 4 and take on Oakland first. The Grizzlies went 18-12 last season and 12-6 in Horizon League play. The Raiders won both meetings in 2016-17. OU will come to the Nutter Center on Feb. 10.

Detroit Mercy: The Raiders stay in the area to play at Detroit Mercy Jan. 6. The Titans won two of three from the Raiders last year. UDM will play at WSU on Feb. 8.

Northern Kentucky: The NKU Norse will host the Raiders first this season on January 13, and make a trip to the Nutter Center on Feb. 17. Wright State won both meetings last year.

Youngstown State: The Raiders host Youngstown State on Jan. 25 after Wright State won both games played last year. The Penguins will host WSU less than two weeks later on Jan. 27.

UIC: The Raiders won all three meetings with the Flames a year ago as UIC went 6-25. The Flames will host the Raiders to end the regular season on Feb. 25 after this Jan. 19 matchup at the Nutter Center.

IUPUI: The Horizon League new “kid” on the block will come to the Nutter Center on Jan. 21 after posting a 24-9 record overall and 12-4 in Summit League play. The Jaguars played in the WNIT. IUPUI will host the Raiders on Feb. 23.

Cleveland State: Wright State plays at CSU on Jan. 25 while the Vikings visit the Nutter Center on Feb. 19. The Vikings posted a 14-16 record a year ago and 9-9 in league play, including a pair of losses to the Raiders.
