Rams can clinch playoffs with win

GREENE COUNTY — With one game left in the regular season, the Greene County area still has three of its seven football teams still mathematically in the hunt for a coveted playoff spot.

Some of the scenarios are a lot more likely than other, but there’s still hope for undefeated Greeneview and 6-3 teams Beavercreek and Bellbrook.

According to Joe Eitel.com, Greeneview controls its own destiny. If they win on the road at Madison-Plains, they’re in. M-P hasn’t beaten a team with a winning record yet this season.

Lose, and the Rams will need to see how the other contenders in Division V’s Region 20 fare. A loss, with potentially a Carlisle win over Dixie, could see Greeneview staying home for the post season. And should Brookville manage to upset Franklin, it’s possible that they too could leap frog past the Rams.

Just win, Rams.

Beavercreek probably has the toughest task of all the county teams: Beat state-ranked and Division I region-best Centerville on the road. … then hope Springfield beats Fairmont, and that Lancaster and Hillard Darby are both upset. Should Fairmont beat Springfield, the Beavers chances get even slimmer, as a Fairmont win would get them in the postseason.

And if ever there were a Cinderella scenario for a team getting in the playoffs, Bellbrook’s situation is it.

The Golden Eagles are in contention at No. 14 in Division III’s region 12, but here’s the crazy part: five of the nine teams ahead of Bellbrook (Chaminade Julienne, Wapakoneta, New Richmond, Piqua and Wilmington) stand a good shot at losing their final games, as they each play teams with records of 7-2 or better.

Two others — Dunbar and McNicholas — are playing teams with identical records, so they could potentially be in for a loss as well.

Only Celina and Elida have week 10 games against teams with losing records.

So Bellbrook’s scenario is this: Beat Oakwood (5-4) on the road, and then hope those favored teams and maybe some others beat the guys ahead of the Golden Eagles.

Stranger things have happened. The Golden Eagles still have a shot.

Beavercreek, shown here charging onto the field prior to the team’s win over Miamisburg, can still make the playoffs. However, they will have the tough task of defeating undefeated and state-ranked Centerville, and getting help from other teams, in order to get there.
