CU senior day victory

CEDARVILLE — The Cedarville University women’s volleyball team needed all five sets to outlast pesky Ohio Dominican in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference match played on Senior Day, Nov. 4 in the Callan Athletic Center.

Cedarville took the contest 25-15, 25-14, 26-28, 23-25, 15-10 to improve to 16-14 overall and 11-4 G-MAC. Taylor Wilkerson pounded a career-high 17 kills to lead three Cedarville players in twin figures.

Gabby Olson ripped 15 kills with seven blocks while Lauren Willow added a season-high 15 kills and six blocks. Krissy Pratt chipped in nine kills, had 16 digs and four blocks. Faith Ferris was good for five blocks. Sierra Schuitema had 27 assists and Lindsey Bray contributed 25. Autumn Foust totaled 24 digs with 15 more from Abby Woodard.

The team plays again 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 at Kentucky Wesleyan in Owensboro, Ky.

Michalski, Jackets regional top 10s

CEDARVILLE — Great Midwest Athletic Conference champion Daniel Michalski placed ninth, and Cedarville was eighth as a team, in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional, Nov. 4 at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course.

Michalski’s time for the 10,000 meters was 31:39.1. He now awaits word on a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Championships. Ethan Sullivan finished 39th in 32:41.4. Zac Bowen came across the line 54th in 33:06.9 and Andrew Testas was 57th in 33:12.0.

CU will run at noon Saturday, Nov. 11 at the NCCAA Championship in Jackson, Miss.

WSU volleyball falls 3-0

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Wright State volleyball team lost 3-0, Nov. 4 (15-25, 9-25, and 16-25).

Wright State and host Green Bay kept the score close in the beginning of the set, tying the game at 2-2 and 3-3 before Green Bay went on a 3-0 run to take the lead at 6-3. Green Bay took the early lead in set two at 6-1 before freshman middle hitter Teddie Sauer put down a kill for Wright State. Wright State took an early lead in set three with back-to-back blocks putting them up 3-1 against Green Bay.

The women will finish conference play 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 against Youngstown State.

Cedarville 11th in regional

CEDARVILLE — Christy Jesson finished 39th to pace the injury-riddled Yellow Jackets women’s cross country team to an 11th-place showing in the Midwest Region Championship Nov. 4 at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course. Jesson covered the 6,000 meters in 22:44.2 while teammate Kayla Casaletto was two spots behind in 22:47.1

Rachel Sweeney was 58th in 23:16.5, Grace Norman came in 72nd in 23:32.8, and Jordan Penrod ended up 88th in 23:52.2. They were the five Cedarville runners to cross the finish line. Seniors Alaina Spears and Sarah Hoffman started, but neither was able to complete the race.

The women’s team races again 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at the NCCAA Championship in Jackson, Miss.

WSU wins exhibition

FAIRBORN — The Wright State men’s basketball team had its final tuneup of the preseason, coming away winners 73-58 over Wayne State, Nov. 3 at the WSU Nutter Center.

The Raiders led 40-39 at halftime as Justin Mitchell posted 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Wright State shot 44 percent from the field and 5-11 from three-point range. WSU outrebounded the Wildcats 19-14. Kendall Jacks had six points for WSC. Wright State pulled away in the final 20 minutes of play, outscoring Wayne State 33-19. For the game, the Raiders shot 46 percent from the field and hit seven threes overall. Wright State won the boards, 41-29.

The Raiders open the season 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 at Loyola, in Chicago.

Raiders defeat IUPUI 2-0

FAIRBORN — The Wright State men’s soccer team ended the regular season with a 2-0 win over Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, Nov. 3 at WSU’s Alumni Field on Senior Night. With a record of 10-6-1, 6-3, it marks the fourth-straight year for the Raiders to reach double-digit wins. Also, this senior class of Jalim Bayo, Sam DeRoy and A.J. Paterson have seen 45 wins in the last four years. With the win, the Raiders will be the No. 4 seed in the Horizon League Championship and will host Cleveland State.

Bucs in Flyin’ to the Hoop

DAYTON — Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.

The Buccaneers are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.
