Rams boys bowlers 1-2

JAMESTOWN — The Greeneview boys varsity bowling team has jumped off to a 1-2 start in the high school regular season, with losses to West Liberty-Salem and Tecumseh, sandwiched around a win over Riverside.

Steven Ross rolled the team’s high series of 376 in a 1,968-1.864 loss Nov. 21 to WLS. He also had the team’s high game in the loss with a 192.

Ross led the Rams again with a 216 high game and 410 series in the Nov. 22 win over Riverside, 2,026-1,716.

In Greeneview’s third match of the regular season, Adam Schornak led the Rams bowlers with a 319 series and 185 high game in a 2,215-1,700 loss to Tecumseh on Nov. 24.

Ram coed group falls to Springfield mixed team

JAMESTOWN — In a Nov. 22 bowling match that pitted the Greeneview coed team of Grace Lucas, Anna Willingham, Crystal Turner, Steven Ross and Adam Schornak against a mixed team from Shawnee and Catholic Central, the Springfield group claimed a 2,466-1,660 win.

Schornak turned in the top Rams series, a 334, and had the team’s high game of 204.

Greeneview nabs first win

JAMESTOWN — After losing team matches Nov. 21 and 22 to West Liberty-Salem and Riverside on successive days, the Greeneview Rams girls bowling team nipped Tecumseh’s boys junior varsity squad by four pins, 1,266-1,262, on Nov. 24.

The Rams have had two high series rollers in their three opening matches. Katy Hilbig rolled a team-best 233 series in the WLS loss; Anna Willingham led the Rams with her 245 series (with a 131 high game) in the loss to Riverside; Hilbig again took top series honors in the win over the Tecumseh JVs with a 197. Erin Miller had high game in that win with a 121.

CSU beats Albany State

WILBERFORCE — Central State University women’s basketball freshman Brooke Spaulding came off the bench to score 18 points as the Marauders beat Albany State, 77-74, Nov. 25.

With the win, the Marauders improve to 4-2 on the year with a 1-0 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Golden Rams drop to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

CSU closed the first quarter on a 10-1 run to take a 21-12 lead. CSU registered 13 steals and held a 21-17 edge in points off turnovers. CSU converted 44 percent of its shots from the field compared to a 37 percent shooting performance from ASU. Gilbert finished the game with a team-high 23 points, seven assists, three steals and five rebounds. Despite being injured in the early stages of the second half, Sierra Harley fought through the pain to finish with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Elesha Foster led ASU with 29 points and 10 rebounds.

CSU men beat Albany State

WILBERFORCE — The Central State Marauders men’s basketball team claimed its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory with a 72-67 home win over Albany State, Nov. 25.

With the win, the Marauders improve to 2-4 overall with a 1-0 mark in SIAC play. The Golden Rams remained winless with a 0-6 mark and 0-1 ledger in the conference.

CSU managed to get to the free throw line 28 times while converting 23 attempts. ASU managed just four trips to the free throw line, making all four shots. CSU turned the ball over just six times while forcing ASU into 19 giveaways.

Jeremy Brown recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Davone Daniels was inserted into the starting lineup and delivered with 18 points and four assists. Tylen Walker paced Albany State with 16 points and seven rebounds.

WSU wins fourth game

FAIRBORN — The Wright State men’s basketball team won its fourth-straight game with a 57-56 decision over Fairfield in the final day of the Wright State Tournament, Nov. 26. Jacksonville won the first game of the day 106-99 in triple overtime.

The Raiders shot 50 percent (15-30) from the field as the Stags shot 40 percent and committed eight turnovers in the first half. The Raiders outscored FU 34-20 in the paint. WSU shot 43 percent from the field and forced 15 turnovers.

Wright State will play next at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 in Bowling Green, Ky. against Western Kentucky.

WSU defeats Jacksonville

FAIRBORN — The Wright State men’s basketball team defeated Jacksonville Nov. 26 in the Wright State Tournament, 68-44.

The Raiders used a 21-10 streak for a 28-15 lead with just under 8 minutes to go in the first half. WSU shot 50 percent from the field, holding the Dolphins to 43.5 percent. The Raiders used a strong offense with a strong defense to almost double their lead in winning, 68-44. WSU shot 45 percent for the game and outrebounded the Dolphins 42-30, but JU was held to just 32 percent and connected on only four threes. WSU had just seven turnovers.

XHS Hall of Fame inductees named

XENIA — David Adkins, Mike Anderson, Peanut Bottorff, John Cowens, Terry Hedges, Tom Hudson, Skip Smith, Paul Storey, Mark Wingard and the 1965 XHS cross country team will make up the 2017 class of the Xenia High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 2017 class marks the seventh to be inducted into the Xenia Hall of Fame.

The six athletes, coach, two contributing community members and the 1965 cross country team will be recognized during the Xenia High School boys basketball game against Stebbins, set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off Friday, Dec. 8 at the high school.

An induction ceremony will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Faith Community Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Drive. The Xenia community is invited to attend. Call Gregg Cross at 937-372-5417 before Friday, Dec. 1 to make reservations.

Xenia opens OVC

HILLSBORO — The Xenia High School boys basketball team will open its season with a 9 p.m. contest on Friday, Dec. 1 in the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic. The Buccaneers will take on Cincinnati Princeton at Southern State College’s Patriot Center.

Princeton features Syracuse University signee Darius Bazley, the top ranked senior in Ohio and the No. 9 rated senior in the country according to ESPN.

Tickets are $10 and include three games that evening. Wilmington plays Campbell County Ky. in the game preceding Xenia. Tickets are available at the door or on the ohiovalleyhoopsclassic.com website.

Flyin’ to the Hoop

DAYTON — Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.

The Buccaneers, led by junior Samari Curtis who is considered by the tournament as the pre-season fourth ranked junior in Ohio, are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.
