Fairborn drops opener

FAIRBORN —Fairborn lost its girls high school basketball season opener Nov. 29, 68-23 at Lebanon. The host warriors were up 16-0 after the first quarter and 33-13 at halftime. Fairborn visits Springboro, Saturday, Dec. 2.

Baker eighth loses game

FAIRBORN — The Baker Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team jumped out to a quick lead, but couldn’t hold it in a 32-19 loss to Smith Middle School from Vandalia Nov. 29. Baker led 7-1 after the first quarter, but trailed 14-8 at halftime and 22-12 after the third. The team was scheduled to play Nov. 30 at Tippecanoe Middle School.

Olson on CCA region team

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University women’s volleyball senior Gabby Olson has been named to the CCA Division II All-Midwest Region Volleyball Second Team for the 2017 season, it was announced on Nov. 29.

The Conference Commissioners Association selections are finalized in voting by the region’s sports information directors. It’s the second consecutive year the middle hitter from Gibsonia, Pa. has been chosen to the second team. Olson guided Cedarville to a 17-16 overall record this fall and a 12-5 mark in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Jackets were a G-MAC Tournament qualifier.

The 2016 G-MAC Player of the Year, Olson was a repeat selection to the G-MAC First Team. She led the 2017 squad with 3.17 kills and 1.26 blocks per set. She concluded her two-year Yellow Jacket career with 782 kills and 294 blocks.

Schwien selected to All-Midwest

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University Yellow Jacket men’s soccer midfielder John Schwien has earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches Division II All-Midwest Region Second Team, it was announced Nov. 29.

Three teams consisting of 35 players in all were chosen by the region’s coaches. He is one of three midfielders on the 11-member second team. A senior from Garnet Valley, Pa., Schwien tallied two goals and two assists for the Yellow Jackets, who finished 9-9-1 overall and 7-6-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

He started the first 15 games on the schedule before going down with a season-ending injury. Schwien started all 58 games in which he played during his three-year Yellow Jacket career totaling five goals and 13 assists.

Miorelli on USC squad

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University Yellow Jacket senior Grace Miorelli has been named to the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Division II All-Midwest Region Second Team for the second time. The USC teams are voted on by the region’s coaches.

A midfielder from Souderton, Pa., Miorelli previously earned a spot on the 2015 squad when she was a junior. She sat out the entire 2016 campaign with an injury. Miorelli was the leading scorer for Cedarville with seven goals and four assists for 18 points as the team finished 11-6-2 overall and 9-4-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). She was also selected to the CCA Division II Midwest Region Second Team and the G-MAC First Team. Miorelli ended her career third on the school’s all-time scoring list with 105 points. She rates second in assists (29) and third in goals (38).

XHS Hall of Fame

XENIA — David Adkins, Mike Anderson, Peanut Bottorff, John Cowens, Terry Hedges, Tom Hudson, Skip Smith, Paul Storey, Mark Wingard and the 1965 XHS cross country team will make up the 2017 class of the Xenia High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 2017 class marks the seventh to be inducted into the Xenia Hall of Fame.

The six athletes, coach, two contributing community members and the 1965 cross country team will be recognized during the Xenia High School boys basketball game against Stebbins, set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off Friday, Dec. 8 at the high school.

An induction ceremony will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Faith Community Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Drive. The Xenia community is invited to attend. Call Gregg Cross at 937-372-5417 before Friday, Dec. 1 to make reservations.

Flyin’ to the Hoop

DAYTON — Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.

The Buccaneers, led by junior Samari Curtis who is considered by the tournament as the pre-season fourth ranked junior in Ohio, are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.
