Badin slogs to 28-7 win over Carroll

DAYTON – Three second-half touchdowns from Badin’s Jack VanSteenkiste powered the Rams to a 28-7 victory over the Carroll Patriots on Friday night.

Down by just a touchdown three plays into the fourth quarter, the Patriots (3-3) appeared poised to get the ball back with a chance to attempt a game-tying drive. But the Rams (5-1) had other ideas. On 4th and 16 from just outside the red zone, Badin dialed up some trickery with a backbreaking 22-yard hook and lateral play that ended up in VanSteenkiste’s hands, to put the Rams up by two touchdowns.

The Rams then picked off Carroll quarterback Jacob Severt on two consecutive drives before scoring on a Zach Larkin pass to VanSteenkiste to ice the game late in the fourth quarter.

Both teams had just one sustained drive each in the first half, both of which ended in touchdowns. Badin’s score came on a 2-yard rumble from running back Cody Boxrucker with 5:39 left in the half.

The home team responded by churning 60 yards down the field inside the red zone. When the Badin defense stiffened to force a field goal attempt, it looked as if Carroll would have to settle for just getting points on the board to end the half. Fortunately for the Patriots, a Badin running into the kicker penalty on the attempt gave them a first down and new life just two yards from the end zone.

After running back Frederick Butts was stuffed at the goal line on the next play, the Patriots hurried to the line and snapped the ball with less than a second remaining in the half for Severt to sneak in for the tying touchdown.

Coming out of the break, Butts looked to have new running legs on Carroll’s first drive, but put the ball on the ground for the visitors to recover. Despite the freshman’s knee appearing down before his losing possession on the play, officials called the play as a fumble and the ball went to the Rams.

The visitors took the turnover and turned it into points nine plays later on a 4-yard touchdown scamper from, who else, but Jack VanSteenkiste, to put Badin up by a touchdown midway through the third quarter.

VanSteenkiste would finish with the night with 44 offensive yards gained and the three touchdowns. Boxrucker rush for 77 yards and the one touchdown on the night.

Severt ended the game 12 of 30, 140 yards, two interceptions passing with one rushing touchdown.

“Very proud, we found a way to win that ball game,” Badin head coach Bill Tenore said following the game. “It was a hard-fought game. … First half was a little rough … but we won the second half twenty one to nothing.”

“We fought hard,” Carroll head coach Ben Rulli said. “Badin’s an outstanding football team. We knew we had our work cut out for us. We challenged the boys all week to come out and fight. I can’t be any prouder of the effort we put in tonight.”

Carroll will play away at Roger Bacon (3-3) next week. Badin will host a matchup with Archbishop Alter (5-1).
