Beavercreek wins GWOC title

CENTERVILLE — With its top five runners placing 20th or better, the Beavercreek Beavers won the Greater Western Ohio Conference boys cross country title by one point over Lebanon, Saturday at Centerville High School.

Ben Ewert (15:35.5) placed second to Troy’s Stephen Jones (15:17.4), and Beavercreek runners Matt Gregson (fifth), Colin Staten (13th), Roberto Vargas (18th) and Raul Vargas (20th) all finished with Ewert in the top-20.

Led by Lauren Shuman’s fourth-place finish (18:25.6), Beavercreek’s girls team finished fourth overall in the girls competition.

‘Free to Breathe’ walk set for Saturday

DAYTON — The 8th annual Dayton Free to Breathe 5K run/walk will take place at Fifth Third Field on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Registration and check-in for the event is set for 8 a.m. on Saturday. Opening rally and fundraising awards will begin at 9:15 a.m. The 5K run/walk and one-mile walk will begin at 9:45 a.m. The closing rally is scheduled for 11 a.m.

The event will raise awareness and fund vital research programs dedicated to doubling lung cancer survival by 2022.

The deadline for online registration has passed. Registration on the day of the event is $30 for adults, $20 for kids 12 and under.

Registration includes entry into the 5K run/walk or 1-mile walk, a 2015 branded Free to Breathe event T-shirt, refreshments and entertainment. A limited quantity of T-shirts in limited sizes will be available for those registering on event day.

Beavercreek offering four fitness classes

BEAVERCREEK — The City of Beavercreek Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is offering a Fat Blaster Boot Camp, Yoga, Piyo (Pilates, Yoga, Dance) and Pilates classes for the fall and winter months. Classes will be held at C.I. Beaver Hall, 3696 Highmont St., in Beavercreek.

The Fat Buster Boot Camp runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., with one session running from Oct. 19-Nov. 20, and another running Dec. 7-Jan.22 (closed 12/21 and 1/1). Cost is $70 for residents; $80 for non-residents.

Yoga classes will be offered Mondays from 6:15-7:15 p.m. Oct. 26-Nov. 23, Dec. 7-Jan.11, and Jan. 25-Feb. 22; and Thursdays at the same times Oct. 29-Dec. 3, and Jan. 27-Feb. 25. Cost is $45 residents; $52 non-residents.

Piyo runs Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 20-Nov. 17, Dec. 8-Jan. 12, and Jan. 26-Feb. 23 Cost is also $45 for residents; $52 non-residents.

Pilates classes will take place at 6:15-7:15 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 28-Nov. 25, Dec. 9-Jan. 13, and Jan. 27-Feb. 24. Residents pay $45; non-residents $52.

Reds announce coaching staff changes

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the 2016 Major League coaching staff that will serve under manager Bryan Price.

Bullpen/assistant pitching coach Mack Jenkins, hitting coach Don Long, Major League catching coordinator Mike Stefanski and bullpen catcher Dustin Hughes will return in 2016 to those positions.

The following coaches will return with new responsibilities: Jim Riggleman will serve as bench coach, Billy Hatcher will coach third base and outfielders, and Freddie Benavides will coach first base and infielders. Last season, Riggleman was third base coach, Hatcher first base coach and Benavides infield coach.

New to the 2016 staff will be Mark Riggins as pitching coach and Tony Jaramillo as assistant hitting coach. Riggins spent the last 4 seasons as the organization’s minor league pitching coordinator and previously served as pitching coach on the Major League staffs of the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. Jaramillo has been a hitting coach in the Reds’ minor league system since 2008, including each of the last 3 seasons at Class AAA Louisville.

The club will not renew the contracts of bench coach Jay Bell, pitching coach Jeff Pico or assistant hitting coach Lee Tinsley.
