Golden Eagles win over Aviators

VANDALIA — With both teams struggling to make shots, the Bellbrook girls — thanks to the play of sophomore point guard Cassidy Hofacker — had just enough fire power to hold off Vandalia, Monday night, defeating the host Aviators 38-34. The Aviators led the entire game until Hofacker scored eight points in the final two minutes to preserve the Eagles’ undefeated season.

Down 34-32 with two minutes to play, Hofacker connected on two straight field goal attempts, and then converted two free throws with under one minute to play, to seal the victory. The win boosts Bellbrook’s record to 11-0 on the year. The only other double figure scorer was Vandalia’s Shelby Moses who made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

The Golden Eagles reserves bumped their record to 10 wins and 1 loss with a 35-11 victory in the opener.

Bellbrook’s next game is at home Thursday night against Eaton, with the reserve game starting at 6 p.m.

CSU’s Woods-West earns third All-America honor

WILBERFORCE — The postseason recognition continued for Central State’s Justin Woods-West as the 6-foot-2 defensive end was named to the 2015 HEROSports.com Division II All-America Team on Monday.

Woods-West, a senior from Detroit, Mich., set a school record for most sacks in a season (13.5) since CSU achieved NCAA Div. II status in 2005. He finished as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) leader in sacks and tackles for loss (22).

Woods-West helped restore CSU back to respectability as the team finished with a 5-5 ledger in 2015, the best record the program has had since 1995. Defensively, CSU put together an impressive resume′. The team was nationally ranked in the following categories:

· No. 9 in total team defense

· No. 1 in sacks (37)

· No. 2 in tackles for loss (107)

· No. 4 in takeaways (34)

· No. 7 in rushing defense (89.2 ypg)

· No. 9 in interceptions (21)

· No. 16 in scoring defense

This is the third All-America honor for Woods-West. Last month, Woods-West was named to the AFCA All-America Team and was an Honorable Mention on BoxToRow’s All-American Team. He was also selected to the D2CCA Super-Region Team and to the SIAC All-Defensive 1st Team.

Woods-West continues to train in the offseason and will be participating in the Gridiron Football Showcase on Monday, Jan. 11 in Bedford, Texas.

Academics

Cedarville earns NCAA Presidents’ Award

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University is one of just 27 NCAA Division II schools in the country to be honored with the Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence for achieving four-year Academic Success Rates of 90 percent or higher.

Great Midwest Athletic Conference member Davis & Elkins College is the other league school to earn the honor. The G-MAC is one of only six conferences in the country to have at least two of its members recognized.

It’s the third consecutive year for both schools to achieve the honor.

The Academic Success Rate (ASR) calculates how student-athletes are making satisfactory progress toward a degree. Cedarville remained at 91 percent which is tied for 23rd out of 322 Division II schools in the country.

The Federal Graduation Rate computes the percentage of student-athletes, who earned their degree in the six-year window from the 2008-09 academic year through 2013-14. CU is 18th nationally in FGR at 74 percent.

The Phoenix led 14-3 just 3:42 into the contest, only to see WSU answer with a 9-2 burst over the next 1:30, four of those coming from Joe Thomasson. Mark Alstork later gave the Raiders their first lead of the game at 28-26 with a fast-break three-pointer at the 8:58 mark.
