Easterling named to NIKE football competition

COLUMBUS — Fairborn High School football player Brandon Easterling has been selected to compete in NIKE’s “The Opening” Midwest Regional competition to be held May 7 in Columbus.

Easterling will be competing in 1-on-1 competition with elite high school wide receivers and defensive backs selected by NIKE from the Midwestern States with hopes of earning a spot in the NIKE National Finals to be held on July 8-10 at Beaverton, Oregon.

The event, which is free to the athlete, provides exposure to colleges and national media through ESPN, 247Sports, Scout.Com and Bleacher Report among other major media. Competitors are selected based upon their football credentials, game videos, combine scores, college recruitment, grades and coach’s recommendation.

Easterling, a three-sport athlete at Fairborn, will be a Skyhawk senior this fall under new Fairborn head coach Chris Roark. Easterling was named to the Associated Press All-Southwest Ohio district team as a junior strong safety and wide receiver.

As a two-way player last season under coach Roy Thobe, Easterling led the Greater Western Ohio Conference in solo tackles with 70 and 104 overall while also catching 44 passes on offense and averaging 27 yards per kickoff return and 9.3 yards per punt return. He has started all 30 games of his high school career. His 4.25 class leading grade-point average also garnered him awards as a GWOC Football Scholar Athlete and recipient of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Scholarship Award.

Doepker selected Horizon Runner of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS — Junior Jessica Doepker of the Wright State University track team has been selected as the Horizon League Runner of the Week for the week ending March 20, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.

Doepker (Kalida) helped lead the Raiders to a fifth-place finish at the Stan Lyons Invitational, Saturday in Indianapolis, in their first action of the outdoor season as she won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.84, beating out 24 other competitors.

Wright State returns to action in two weeks with two meets, competing in the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational in Cincinnati April 1-2 and at the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational in Athens on April 2.

Turner named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS — Wright State junior Tori Turner has been named as the Horizon League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 20, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.

Turner (Hamilton, Lakota West) went a perfect 3-0 in singles play last weekend. She won 6-3, 6-1 in no. 5 singles against Ball State on Friday, 6-0, 6-2 in no.no. 4 singles Sunday at Western Illinois and 6-0, 6-1 in #5 singles later Sunday at Illinois State.

Turner also teamed with Taylor Culbertson for a 6-2 decision in first doubles at Western Illinois.

On the season, Turner is 18-8 in singles play and 14-10 in doubles.

Wright State (13-3) returns to Horizon League play this weekend by traveling to Cleveland State (3 p.m., Friday) and Youngstown State (5 p.m., Saturday).

Spring Has Sprung 5K April 2

XENIA — Registration is now open for Greene County Public Health’s Seventh Annual Spring Has Sprung Healthy Families 5K Run-Walk Saturday, April 2 at the Xenia YMCA located at 135 E. Church St.

This event supports the efforts of the health district to provide and promote healthier lifestyle choices in Greene County, and encourages healthy, active lifestyles in Greene County.

Registration and check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Xenia YMCA with the pet- and stroller-friendly run-walk beginning at 9 a.m. The course features a flat terrain in and around the Xenia area beginning and ending at the Xenia YMCA. Afterwards, healthy refreshments will be provided and participants can visit the various sponsors and vendors in the gymnasium.

The cost is $15 per person by March 25, which includes an event T-shirt. After March 25, the cost is $20 per person – T-shirt not guaranteed. Teams of 10 or more are eligible to receive a discount. Medals will be awarded to the top three male/female in each age category and a grand prize will be awarded for the top male/female overall.

Dragons single-game tickets on sale

DAYTON — Dayton Dragons 2016 single-game tickets will are now on sale at the Dragons Box Office located next to the main entry gates at Fifth Third Field.

Opening Day for the Dragons is set for 4 p.m., Saturday, April 9 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The Dragons are scheduled to play 70 home games during the regular season. They will officially begin their 17th season of Midwest League baseball April 7 at Bowling Green.

The box office will be open throughout the season from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. On weekend game dates, the box office will open at noon and close in the seventh inning. The box office will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays when the team is on the road.

Single-game tickets can be purchased in person, at the Dragons box office, any Miami Valley Kroger store, or any Ticketmaster outlet, online, at daytondragons.com, or by calling the Dragons Box office at (937) 228-2287; or Ticketmaster charge-by-phone at (937) 228-2323.

There is never a convenience charge for tickets purchased at the Dragons box office. There is also no convenience charge for tickets purchased from the Dragons by phone at (937) 228-2287 (a shipping charge is added for tickets that are mailed).
