Skyhawks win again in Tennessee

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Fairborn finished up the Pounder Invitational with a decisive victory over Sale Creek (Tenn.). Jake Neece started in the mound for the Skyhawks and Will Coleman came in relief. Offensively, Andy Gilbert had himself a day. He sparked the Skyhawks in the third inning with a grand slam, and then his next at-bat hit another two-run home run. On the day he went 4-for-5, with two home runs, two doubles, and seven RBIs.

The Skyhawks opened up Greater Western Ohio Conference, South Division play on Monday against Miamisburg at Skyhawk Stadium.

Cedarville’s Martin presented Kay Yow Award

INDIANAPOLIS – Cedarville University Women’s Basketball Head Coach Kirk Martin was presented the Kay Yow Heart of a Coach Award today by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Martin accepted the prestigious honor at the annual FCA Breakfast at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott during the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Convention at the Final Four.

The award was established in 2008 to honor Kay Yow, head women’s basketball coach at North Carolina State University.

The purpose of the award is to recognize a women’s basketball coach who, over the course of his or her career, has coached according to Biblical principles – a coach who has coached the heart of the athlete, as well as the body and mind.

“There are certain events that are impacting for a lifetime and today was certainly that for me,” said Martin. “I am humbled and extremely honored to receive this award.

“To be able to receive it in it in front of family and friends was wonderful. God is good. What a day!!”

A 1976 graduate of Cedarville College, Martin recently closed out a 15-year career as head coach at his alma mater after announcing last fall that the 2015-16 season would be his last.

He guided the Lady Jackets to a 22-8 record and a share of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season title.

Martin exits as Cedarville’s all-time winningest women’s basketball coach with a 380-108 record – an average of 25.3 wins per season.

His teams won eight conference championships and made 12 national tournament appearances including the school’s first-ever NCAA Division II Championship berth in 2015.

Scholtens Horizon Pitcher of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS — For the second time this season, Wright State baseball senior Jesse Scholtens has been selected as the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.

Scholtens (Fairfield, Calif. Rodriguez) held Northern Kentucky to just one run and three hits over seven innings Friday as the Raiders won 12-1 at Nischwitz Stadium. He struck out eight and walked two in improving to 4-0 on the season.

Along with his 4-0 mark, Scholtens has struck out 44 batters in 45.2 innings, allowing just 37 hits and 11 walks, and has posted a 3.94 earned run average. The 44 strikeouts lead the league while he is tied for the lead in wins and is second in innings pitched.

This marks the second time this season Scholtens has been named as Pitcher of the Week. He also received the honor on March 14 following his perfect-game performance at Dayton on March 11.

Wright State (18-9, 7-2 Horizon) hits the road for four games this week, taking on Cincinnati at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, before traveling to Milwaukee for a three-game Horizon League series over the weekend.

Raiders rally past N. Kentucky

NKU scored twice in the top of the first as Kyle Colletta singled to center with one out and Logan Spurlin followed with a two-run home run down the left field line.

Caleb Sampen (4-0) struck out a season-high seven and the freshman righthander did not walk a batter in earning the win.

J.D. Orr and Ryan Fucci each had two hits for Wright State (18-9, 7-2 Horizon), who travels down I-75 Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest at Cincinnati.
