Beavercreek defeats ‘Burg

A trio of Beavercreek players scored a trio of goals in Monday’s 18-2 Beavers win over Miamisburg. Sabra Woodruff, Alyssa Hinton and Megan Miller each scored three goals, Claire Sturkol, Mackenzie Sorensen, Ellie Cade and Maddie Frye scored two apiece, and Cassie Mullins added a goal in the win.

WSU signs 10

FAIRBORN — Wright State University head women’s soccer coach Patrick Ferguson has announced the signing of 10 players for the 2016 season. Those joining the Raiders include Livi Raflik, Alyssa Garberich, Kat Schmidt, Mimi Sarkodie, Christine Ommert, Jordyne Helinski, Andrea Gomez, Kelsi Spillman, Maddie Jewell and Alysha Hammer.

Livi Raflik (Springboro), a 5-foot-7 midfielder, was a three-time all-league, all-district and all-city player while being named all-state in 2013 and 2015. She was the player of the year in the MVSSCA and GWOC South. Livi ended her senior campaign with 15 goals and 10 assists as Springboro advanced to the regional finals with an 18-2-2 record. She also played for the Ohio Galaxies G97 Elite Club.

Alyssa Garberich (Springfield Shawnee), a 5-5 forward, led the Miami Valley in goals and assists in 2015 with 24 goals and 13 assists while scoring 74 career goals. She also played for the Ohio Galaxy as well as competed in basketball, track and was the kicker for the football team. Her five assists is an OHSAA record. Alyssa was the team MVP for the last two years and was Second Team All-State in 2015.

Kat Schmidt (Thiensville, Wisc. University), a 5-3 midfielder, attended the University School of Milwaukee where she led the team in assists the first two years and won four Wisconsin state titles. Playing with the FC Wisconsin Eclipse, the team went undefeated in the Phoenix ECLN Event.

Mimi Sarkodie (Huber Heights Wayne), a 5-6 forward, was the team captain at Wayne High School and played for the Darlington Soccer Academy and Ohio South of Olympic Development. Also competing in track, she made regionals in several events.

Christine Ommert (Springboro), a 5-6 defender, was defensive MVP as a junior and senior at Springboro High School, two-time All-Miami Valley and various scholastic awards. Christine also played for Metro FC and Ohio South in Oympic Development.

Jordyne Helinski (Bellville Clear Fork), a 5-7 forward, was all-league and all-district each of her four years at Clear Fork High School as well all state her final three years as the team won three league titles. She collected 106 goals during her career, including 45 in one season. Jordyne also played for Ohio Strikers United.

Andrea Gomez (Loveland), a 5-11 defender, was team MVP, all-league, all-city and all-district as well as all-state her senior season while she also earned multiple academic accolades. As a defender, she was part of 11 shutouts and a team 0.57 goals against average as Loveland won the state title. Andrea also played for the Warren County Soccer Academy.

Kelsi Spillman (Milford), a 5-9 goalkeeper, was the team MVP and named all-league as well as numerous academic awards. She posted four shutouts as a senior while giving up only 20 goals. Kelsi also played for the Cincinnati Soccer Alliance.

Maddie Jewell (West Chester Lakota West), a 5-8 keeper, was a two-time team MVP and all-league selection while being named all-region as a senior as well as receiving several academic honors. She posted six shutouts as a senior along with 107 saves. Maddie also played with the Warren County Elite G97

Alysha Harmer (Tipp City Tippecanoe), a 5-5 defender, was the team captain at Tippecanoe High School as well as being named all league. She led the team to a 14-1-3 record and sectional finals. Alysha also played for the Ohio Galaxies 97 Elite, winning several titles.

Wright State advanced to the Horizon League finals last year under 11-year head coach Patrick Ferguson.

Men’s Basketball

Raiders Sign Two

FAIRBORN — Loudon Vollbrecht, a 6-foot-8, 300-pound post player, and Mike LaTulip, a 6-1 guard, have signed institutional aid agreements to attend Wright State University and play basketball for the Raiders in the fall, WSU head men’s basketball coach Scott Nagy announced today.

The Geneva (Ill.) High School graduate, Vollbrecht led the Vikings to a 30-5 record as a junior and a fourth-place finish at the state tournament as a junior when he averaged 10.8 points and 6.6 rebounds a game. As a senior, he was injured during the football season and did not play basketball. Vollbrecht also played for the AAU team Tri-City Thunder.

An Arlington Heights, Ill. native and graduate of Prospect High School, LaTulip redshirted last year at the University of Illinois where he received his degree this past May. He will be eligible immediately and have one year remaining. At Prospect, he averaged 22 points and was the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,484 points. As a senior, LaTulip was named second-team All-State by the Champaign News-Gazette, third-team by the Illinois Basketball Association and honorable-mention by the Associated Press.

Nagy joined Wright State in March as head coach after spending the last 21 years as the head coach at South Dakota State University where he led SDSU to three NCAA Tournaments over the last five years.
