Tate named Bellbrook head coach

BELLBROOK —The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek School District and the Bellbrook High School Athletic Department announced Wednesday that Donnie Tate has been named the varsity head coach for the Bellbrook boys basketball team.

Tate has been an assistant coach at Carroll High (2011-‘12 and 2014-2016) and Beavercreek High (2003-2008). He served as Carroll’s Freshman boys basketball coach from 2008 to 2011.

He replaces 14-year head coach Perry Caldwell who resigned after last season.

In a press release statement, Tate said: “I’m looking forward to building on the success that Coach Caldwell has had. My time as an assistant coach under Charlie Back, Dennis Wahle, and Tim Cogan have prepared me for this opportunity. I’m excited about the future of Bellbrook Boys’ Basketball.”

COLLEGE

Two Raiders earn regional honors

FAIRBORN — Senior pitcher Jesse Scholtens and senior outfielder Ryan Fucci were selected to their respective All-Midwest Region teams by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) on Wednesday.

Scholtens (Fairfield, Calif. Rodriguez) was named to the region first team. A First Team All-Horizon League honoree this season, Scholtens led the league in starts with 16 and in innings pitched with 109.2 while tying for the league lead in wins with a record of 10-1. He finished second in strikeouts with 95 and third in both earned run average at 2.95 and in opposing batting average at .220. In league play, he went 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 62.1 innings.

The Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on March 14, Scholtens pitched the first perfect game in school history on March 11 with a 1-0 win at Dayton, striking out a career-high 12 in the process. He struck out nine at Youngstown State on April 22 and eight on three other occasions, including at North Carolina State on February 26.

Fucci (Lexington, Ky. Tates Creek) was a second-team regional selection. Also a First Team All-Horizon League selection in 2016, he hit .326 with a team-best 11 home runs, 64 RBI and 26 stolen bases. He finished first in the Horizon League in home runs, RBI and stolen bases, second in total bases (124), fourth in slugging percentage (.525), fifth in runs scored (51) and seventh in hits (77) and on-base percentage (.412).

Both players were selected in the Major Baseball Draft this past weekend as Scholtens was chosen by the San Diego Padres in the ninth round with the 264th pick while Fucci was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 25th round with the 747th pick.

Scholtens and Fucci are the first ABCA All-Region honorees for WSU since pitcher Andrew Elliott was named First Team and infielder Michael Timm Second Team in 2014.

Wright State posted a school-record 46 wins in 2016 as the Raiders won the Horizon League regular-season and tournament titles and were a finalist in the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive year.
