XENIA – Greene Memorial Hospital will present two free upcoming workshops for seniors, “Food and Mood” and “Aging in Place.”

“Food and Mood” will be presented Aug. 13 and “Aging in Place” on Sept. 9 at Greene, 1141 N. Monroe Drive.

Theresa Gilbert will speak about “Food and Mood.” Gilbert is a registered dietician who has been with Kettering Health Network’s Community Outreach for several years. She has a passion for educating others on how nutrition can positively impact their health, according to Greene County Community Outreach Coordinator Rachel Hotelling.

“Nutrition presentations are often requested by our community members,” said Hotelling. “Because there are so many different fad diets that people try that leave them feeling unhappy with low energy levels and potentially anxious. This is a great presentation that explains the benefits of a well-balanced diet and how it can improve your mood and energy levels. All ages would benefit from this presentation.”

Shelly Janning will present the workshop “Aging in Place” on Sept. 9. Janning is an occupational therapist for Kettering Health Network’s NeuroRehab and Balance Center. She is also a certified aging in place specialist, who enjoys helping others keep their home safe as they age.

This workshop is especially designed for those seniors who desire to live independently in their homes as long as they can, offering information on techniques to make their home safer and more efficient as they age.

Hotelling said, “More than one-third of adults age 65 and older fall each year. Too often these falls occur in or around the home and often lead to serious injury. This presentation will help inform the senior community the importance of keeping their homes safe.”

Both workshops are free, but require registration. Lecture series are offered monthly at both GMH and Soin Medical Center on a variety of topics. Call Kettering Health Network Community Outreach at 937-558-3988 for more information and to register.
